I had to reflect on the cost and complexity of boating this weekend when I made my usual pilgrimage from Porthmadog to Portmeirion by boat. For those that don't know the area, its only two miles along the estuary and two miles return.

Nope - I didn't take Coney Island, its too sandy and shallow, so I took my little rubber Avon Redcrest with 3.5HP Yamaha. I do this ritual at low water to plot the ever changing channel so that at high springs I can take Coney Island and let everyone marvel at my seamanship and local knowledge, when really all I am doing is playing an expensive game of dot-to-dot on my GPS.

The weather was crystal clear and sunny and the views, as always, were just fabulous with all the trees in leaf and the hillsides awash with bright flowers and rhodedendrons. The great part is when you round a headland and the "village" of Portmeirion comes into sight - its just spectacular and I may have seen it a thousand times but I never tire of it.

So that was an afternoon well spent and what does £330 have to do with it? Well that was the cost of my Avon and Yamaha, both bought second hand.

Oh - how could I forget the enormous fuel costs....1 litre of two-stroke.

Dave,

Just had a look at your little trip on MultiMap. Looks lovely. Exposed in a SW'ly though? Best boating conditions for you I guess is gentle NW'ly thru E'ly?

And what's the future of boating in Wales? Is it going up and up? What's the access like? Where does the average boater come from? I hear of potentially a new marina in Beaumaris one day - is that a runner do you think and if so where will the boats (and the owners) come from?

So many questions.............

Rob

Loadsa questions there Rob!

Spot on with the wind assumptions, a westerly through southerly above F4 can give problems, and an easterly through northerly can blow F5-6 and still hardly ripple the water. With calm weather the estuary becomes a mecca for waterskiing.

Boating in North Wales is on the up, I am glad to report, more so because of Pwllheli Marina, and its associated marina industrial estate. Talk about growth!! All the major players are there and it sells LPG which suits me just fine!

We seem to get an eclectic selection of boaters but the predominance is Manchester or Birmingham and as for Beaumaris I'm not sure? Haven't heard too much of that of late.

From what I read of boating on the south coast (all the usual suspects) I consider us lucky up here in that we do seem to have more space!

Thanks for your interest.
Dave

God were scraping the barrel now. Even I have not yet resorted to trips in the rubber dinghy. Might give it a try after reading your excelent post on PortMeirion. Just a tip, It would sound much more exciting if you sunk just now and then, or maybe an engine fire??....Hope this helps.../forums/images/icons/laugh.gif

Well dare I say (tempting fate) that the little Yammy seems bullet proof. I chanced across it it in a canal side side shop where its previous owner had bought it for his grand-children to mess about with on his dinghy. Turns out they weren't that bothered and he sold it to me for just £189. That was 3 years ago and it ain't missed a beat since. Similar story with my Avon.

So...unsinkable and bullet proof - boring eh!

Did you ever read my post on being out at sea and the petrol tank rupturing spilling 30-odd gallons of petrol down into the engine bay whilst the two V6's were busily churning away?? Now that was interesting!
