Just thought I would let everyone know I have just got what I think is a fantastic deal:
- Fully battened cruising main with free battens and cars
- Cruising chute with free snuffer
- All custom built
- £1960 including 25% off during boat show
- Hyde

Regards,

Mike

Delighted that you feel you have a bargain.

Of course if its a 40 footer that you have it sounds like a real bargain. If its a 18'6" Cornish Shrimper, you might have got a better deal somewhere else? The latter suggestion is tongue in cheek as we all know that Cornish Shrimpers only ever fly Tri Radial Spinnakers with a Blooper.

The sails will almost certainly be made in China - but that doesn't make them bad sails.

I bought Hyde sails 2 years ago.Hyde make their sails in their own loft in the Phillipines. They moved their production some years ago. They are open about this & have pictures of the facility on the website. When I obtained quotes I found that some sailmakers were a bit cute about where their sails were made. Some have sails made in the far east & finish them off here but call them UK sails(a bit like chicken packed in UK).A friend who was getting quotes asked sailmakers to confirm in writing that their sails were totally manufactured in the UK.Some failed to respond.I chose Hyde because they were reasonably priced & were able to come & measure the boat on the East Coast,No relationship just a satisfied customer.

They've always made their sails in the far East. In the early 70's (they were called Musto and Hyde then) their sails were made by inscrutable but diligent locals (like myself) in a hut in Rawreth Shot, and that's even further east than Wickford, in darkest Essex. /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif

[/ QUOTE ] I wonder why your friend wanted the companies to confirm in writing that they only used UK? It seems a bit odd as my feeling is that so long as the company is open and honest about what it does - ie doesn't claim made 100% in UK when the process starts in another country then I don't really care.

In fact I care rather more about the quality of the sails and the cloth used.

Will chat them up at the boat show.

I just had my headsail measured and price quoted. The original "ball park" quote was given at Soton boat show. (all measuerments within original ball park quote) Whilst the price has gone up sligthtly due to currency chnages,(I can accept this) they have changed the inital offerd discount of 15% to 10%. Not impressed!

Still if they are that busy and time are that good, best I get round to the other sailmakers and get some new quotes!

I also got a great deal from hyde back end of november same deal as offered at exell plus a 25% dicsount.
jag 28 cruising main fully battened as yours including free stackaway system approx £780.00 also knew up front that sails are made in phillipenes had to measure myself with lots of communication with charles at hyde but hey! i do live in lancashire.

I didn't say they would be bad if made in China, its just that I have had one made there, and it was poor. That was in the spring. I have just had another made by Ratsey and Lapthorne, Cowes, and the service, interest and enthusiasm could not be beaten. The quality of the sail was excellent, with all the details done nicley.
I also feel happier that my money was paying a local firm, with Island sailmakers. Not really a 'global trading' approach, but made me feel better about spending my money!
The problem of getting sails made overseas is in the modification if they are wrong. Recutting/edging just makes a mess so you have to put up with what you are given. /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif

hyde sails

Ive also just got 25% discount from Hyde sails, Ive had a genoa from them last year and its great, whats the problem with the sails being made overseas? Its in their own loft and if my genoa is anything to go by the workmanship is excellent and the service I got was first rate
