Just serviced the engine on Fosca, no dropped nuts or anything so disgustingly cheerfull, Any thoughts on which grease to use on the stern tube, I've used Keenol before now but it always looked a bit wishy washy to me. The stuff that the previous owner used was a heavy dark brown grease that looked like you could glue a keel on with it but now all gone. Any enlightening thoughts out there? (I know not to use graphite or copperslip)

It was probably "under water grease" which used(?) to be made for outboard motor bottom ends.

I understand that Keenol is no longer made. Is this right?

Not sure about the availability of Keenol as haven't bought any in years, but have to say I never really trusted it. I always thought it a little insubstantial for the job it was meant to do, having said that I came across a grease in Holland which several boat owners swore by, I couldn't recall what it was called but it was very thick and a fetching shade of blue, since posting I have been down to the boat and there in a locker is a brand new tube I didn't know I had, Its called RETINAX HD2 and made by Shell, I assume its available in this country. Love the boat by the way, saw her pictures on the 'whose going' site.
regards, Mike

still see keenol on swindlery shelves, not heard anything about it being discontinued.., i have always used keenol, but as you say seems to be slightly runny, for the job, tend to clean more out from the bilge then anything else..

I tried some thick trailer trailer bearing type grease but it was not nearly as water repellent / good in the stern tube as Keenol. Keenol is water resistant and IMHO much better than more viscous stuff that is not primarliy designed to resist water. Trust is an act of faith until soemthing goes wrong and over 18 years keenol has been good for me.

This question came up a year or so ago. A clever chap with experience in the petro chemical industry said that LM2 will do the job fine. I paid £2 for a can in the local "cheap shop" - will let you know if the bottom drops out.
