Some of you may or may not know, but it makes little difference anyway. However, my only eighteen month old super duper intel inside abacus, got struck by lightening. Also did the chimley causing a three inch crack, which might have fallen on our heads!!, not the crack, that would not have mattered much.

Well anyway the insurance has mended the chimley. Thank you Mr insurance man. But my abacus (intel inside) so it said on the box. Still needs a new one and they said we could get our own. Thold one cost about £950 quiddish. Now the question is. Wot abacus (Pentium inside) Is that any good?? All I know is, I have a great big box, but when you take the screws out, there is hardly anything inside, dont know where the pentium thingy is. Anyway I wont a box with loads of goodies inside and some plug sockets for my camera thingy, oh Ive just discovered this DVD thingy which might be a venerable desease is it STD they call it now?? Thought that wos sumate to do with telefones. Anyway I dont want THAT!!!

So to put it in a knut shell. I want a new comfuser that wot can cope with wot I'm saying and doing. What ever that might be and one of thoughs flat scerreem tellies as well. Ta thanks!!

Please help.

(&(*345%*( OUCH!

Don't touch Tiny with a bargepole. Amongst the worst made computers there are! and the backup and service is lousy. If you are going to go none mainstream computers, then go for Evesham or Mesh - the computer fraternity give them award after award for build quality and after sales service. A bit like the Garmin of the computer world.

Dell are good computers, as are Packard Bell and several other mainstream manufacturers

PCWorld/Comet etc are handy to buy mainstream type of computers, but pricey by comparison to what you can get elsewhere

Well if your confuser's bust how did you make this and numerous (far too many IMHO) other posts?

And I also disagree about that chimney, if it had fallen on yer bonce it might have knocked some sense into that great empty space.

Budget, what you really want to use it for...give us a real clue.

If for internet access only, and bugger all else, as compared to using it to do offfice accounts and the like.

Lots of glam bits that some peeps will use, but 90% wont. Do you want to put your entire recordings of Val Doonican on there, so you'll need speakers and a decent sound card, or do you want to watch porno films on DVD, in which case you need a very good high res screen and a decent video card???? tell us what you want to do, and can tell you which computer you need for budget you have in mind.

Bit like a newbie buying a boat and asking lots of silly but innocent questions?

whilst hlb in bed, (no nooo noooooooo wasn't the whiskey !! ha ha, 1 black, could be eithnic, black pudding still lurking in the fridge ) what we need are lots of things, really re a computer. yes office things, word, accounts/excell, all the usual things, plus internet, DVD's, & as we are both keen on music & having a few different locations want to copy CD's as well.

have bought pc's from dell before, they are extremely good, but you need to give them exact specifications and they come up with the goods, but what do we need to order thats our problem

make a list of things required, then list of nice to have.
Same as buying a boat, no one can advise it you don't know uses. Loads of gadgets that look wonderful, but of little use to pro's. Want an offshore racer, or cruiser, or raggie, going solo, or family of 5 to accomodate. Need to know details or wouldn't give advice to boat buyer. Similar with confusers?

First, budget. Where are you going to use computer. Is it going to be an office machine with some home use, or mainly home with some office use .Need to copy cd's ...then two drives...if so, want to play DVD, can get machines with two DVD drives, one read and write, one read only, that can also do CD;s

Need lots more info as to use before making recommendation

Haydn, imagine making a recommendation to a newby as to which boat to buy? You wouldn't do it! So, give loads of info of what you want to do, in detail, and I won't tell you which confuser to buy, but will give considered thought!

Yep just like that one!! DVD's Old one did that, but never had any DVD thingys to put in it! It reroted them as well. Twas 56k is that still good or need better now?? Can I have TV on it?? Debs wants a flat screen. Plugs intfront for cameras and what ever. Oh and a shaver point as well../forums/images/icons/smile.gif About £950 or less, or insurance will go up the wall. Now confusers are much different than boats cos they keep inventing things that you never knew you needed untill you get it. Boats have not changed much in the last 20 years, bit faster and more stupid shapes I'll grant. But confusers are zillions of times beter and faster. It needs to do office stuff and play thing. Need to plug lap top in. One that does not crash all the time. Boat never crashes, just needs new carpets all the time! It has to play music. What about an eberspacher!!!!

New computer will probably come with Xp operating system. So 56k no good at all. Need absolute minumum of 128k, preferably 256k

Just about any computer will play music, if this is a requirement, go for one that has decent speakers, and maybe a separate audio card of decent quality

How about this:

Upgrade optical drives to 2 drives
Upgrade software to MS Office
Upgrade speakers to surround sound
Upgrade multicard reader (for cards from camera etc)
Leave everything else as is

If you wanted a Hi Fi where would you go?

If a specialist hi fi shop, go to a specialist computer shop for your computer.

If Curry's (or similar) go there for your computer

It is just another bit of electronics and go to the shop that is pitching at the level you want. It is too easy to end up with something that you won't use to its full potential if you listen to experts. Sometimes spotty oiks have their place and the package option in high street stores will do all that the average person wants.

The sure thing is that in six months time you will see one twice as good at half the price however much you spend.

Haydn wants advice on what he needs. You are never going to get that level of advice in PCWorld or Curries, and as he has already stated on this thread, been to PCWorld, and couldn't make a decision, so pointing him back there is not exactly helpful

Who's a grumpy boy today then? I think he may have the same trouble understanding some of the advice here (and that is not a criticism of him)

Look at <A target="_blank" HREF=http://www.ybw.com/cgi-bin/forums/showthreaded.pl?Cat=&Board=mby&Number=572835&page=0&view=collapsed&sb=5&o=2&vc=1#Post572835>this post</A> which just comments on suppliers too! Who isn't being helpful and not giving advice on what he wants here?

You could try the dell systems too <A target="_blank" HREF=http://configure.euro.dell.com/dellstore/config.aspx?c=uk&cs=ukdhs1&kc=305&l=en&oc=D0925&s=dhs&sbc=dimen_2400>here</A> and pick and choose your bits.
You can drop the standard monitor and specify the 17 inch flat panel with TV, just as the guv'nor ordered.
Comes with the 56k modem, as all seem to, and you can add the ADSL modem for free for fast surfing.
Drop the expensive 3yr insurance and go to 1 year
Pick two optical drives
Forget upgrading office for £150 and instead download open office (with your new ADSL modem) which is totally compatible with, and looks like, microsoft office and FREE....thats FREE
Plus with these Dells, you get two fans at the back for that eberspacher feel!
all for £847

I would think you are getting mixed up between your Kilobytes and your Megabytes and your Modem and your RAM (Memory).

56k usually refers to modem speed and is about as good as it gets for dial up. If you are going over to broadband, you need a different, faster modem which is usually a USB external one.

RAM is what basically allows your computer to do several things at once and influences the speed it can do them. With much modern software you really need 256Mb and if going for a new computer I would go for 512Mb, especially for anything to do with imaging/video. Memory is relatively cheap at the moment and going that next step doesn't push the price up by much.
