I anticipate crossing the Channel for the first time (in own boat) this summer and am looking at entering France at Gravelines - then onto the canal system heading south.

Everything I have read refers to entering at either Calais or Dunkirk. I've been to Gravelines and it looks much quieter and an easy approach. Maybe looks are deceiving!!!

Has anyone out there done this trip and what are the problems - if any??

I would appreciate any help and advice.

Thanks

TO get back to the point, its a great stop and very quiet, I recommend the "La Symphonie" restaurant for a good feed.
Beware however that sometimes they dont shut the tidal gates when the tide goes out and you will settle into soft mud (very soft!). My boat was Ok and I have a keel.
Other thing is getting a waypoint for the midpoint between the breakwaters is tricky from the chart as they are so close together. If you know anyone with charting software, get them to create you a waypoint Long & Lat for midpoint and after that you just follow the channel up past the fishing moorings (on left) through the gates to the marina. Cost me about £8 for a 32 footer last year.
I may be going there myself early August!
