I clicked on YM's front page link to the new Grand Soleil LC46. I personally think the boat is plain weird:

  1. Stop the video 7 seconds in; is there a risk of falling off? :ambivalence:
  2. The boat boasts a moulded bowsprit for a big asymmetric/code-0. But with no sail storage behind the anchor, where would you stow the extra sails?
  3. Is it just me, or is that mainsheet arch ridiculous
  4. If you are bored click on this link and scroll to 3:08 mins. Would I win La Route Du Rhum with this boat ;) http://www.grandsoleil.net/lc46.html

Awful spoiler
How do you sit in the cockpit when the boat is actually sailing, there is no place to brace your feet
Nice bow sprit, but is that within the 46 foot as the marina will know when they calculate your fees
Where is the nav station;
Nice placement of what I take to be the tv; just below where any water will land if you get some sea over the hatch and generally where you would dump your foulies

I guess for the med market it's ideal; but not Northern Europe. As long as they know what market they are after; the rest of us can sit back and laugh!!!!

Nice style, but I believe that new boats have too many sharp corners. There will be a return to curved shapes once the novelty has gone.

Actually the arch is possibly quite good when you remember how many yachts like to have a tent over the hatch & this will support one very well
the inside is great but lacks a proper nav station.
i suspect that the video does not do it justice

When I visited it in Dusseldorf I got the impression of a boat in tune with the design credo of the moment. I did not like what passes for a chart table and I would certainly not want to have the flat screen tv.
I have sailed on a friend's Grand Soleil 45 of around 2005 vintage, which is a great performance yacht, but has some niggles with quality of interior finish. I remain to be convinced that this new boat matches the sailing qualities of the 45

Interesting comments; to me it's a weird and unattractive hybrid between a 65' mono, a 40' cat and a DFS showroom:

  • The flat screen TV would of course be fried by the first wave down the hatch, but how could the designer forget to put seats in front of it?
  • Naked navigating pre Capt Schettino style with only an iPad, coffee table and no instruments is no longer in vogue - especially in the Med
  • Lack of dedicated stowage for additional foresails means they will have to come down below and soak everything
  • Pricey marinas will charge for the moulded bowsprit
  • There's nothing to hold onto down below
  • The cockpit has is too high and far too shallow in order to facilitate full head height cabins below
As Gordon Ramsey would say, Wow! What a mess! :)
