I Finally got round to buying a Handheld GPS last week,
It was delivered yesterday along with a New Streetpilot 2610.

After reading the Instructions at home last night, it said first thing to do, was,(And i Quote);;
'Initializing the GPS Reciever'.
1) Take the unit outside where a clear 360' view of the sky can be obtained.
2) Turn the unit on and hold it in front of you point upwards.
3) The intialization process is automatic, and should take the GPSMAP 76 no longer than 5 minutes to acquire enough satellite signals to become operational.

So 10:30 last night i put my jacket on, and out i go, into the horrible cold pi##ing wet rain. I walk to the middle of the Cul-de-sac(away from the house) and switch it on. and hold it alof.
15minutes i stood there resembling something the like of the Statue of Liberty, If any neighbours looked out of their windows they must have thought i was going loopy or something. And after all that time it still hadn't recieved enough signal to work.

So i took it too work with me today, to try it out in the yard, so far its been 'Acquiring Satellites' for the last 2 hours, and still nothing.

Am i doing something wrong?

Can anybody give me tips on what else the GPSMAP76 is capable off?

And finally the 'Mapsourse' City Navigator Cd rom that comes with the Streetpilot 2610, after unlocking it and downloading it onto the SP 2610, will i then be able to download it also on to the GPSMAP 76?

Cheers

Alistair.

Hi, Santa bought me the 176 for xmas. It took about 5 mins in back garden to aquire the sats for the first time- one thing I have noticed is that it eats batteries and would not set up correctly the other day due to low power. Works fine on boats 12v. Also- is the stub antenna plugged in properly and pointing upwards?

Possibly daft suggestions, but may help.

Yes, I put new batteries in it when i got it last night. They are already at 50%,

I have also tried it in the Cigarette lighter 12v supply, but was told the signal would not be great through the car. Is that correct?

Not too sure about the car bit- Happy1 told me his worked fine on the dash of his though. Should work okay as thats what its designed to do. I have had to mount mine fairly low on the dash of my boat until I can relocate some other kit. I have noticed it sometimes flips between 2D and 3D coverage.

I will have another look through the destructions for mine tonight- see if I can spot anything we may have missed!

If it's taking that long to initialise, it suggests it's lost its almanac and is downloading it. Leave it on, and it will get there eventually.

Does the 76 have the option to tell it roughly where on the map you are. That cuts down initialisation time a lot if it's trying to work out where in the world it is.

PS - question about car window in later post. Yes should work quite happily, all mine have done so. Only problem is if you have a heated windscreen, in which case that tends to block the signal, and you need exterior antenna

Hi

Iv'e had a 176c now for a year and I think its a great little machine!

Like all new gps machines when you first fire them up you have to tell the machine which part of the world you are in! it will find itself eventually but it takes at lot longer if you dont tell it where it is! i.e. England!

You will find it will work well inside your car or your boat as long as the ariel can "see" the sky!

Best of luck Barry

Had a quick google, and yes 76 does accept Mapsource data, though the memory capacity is a little low compared to other Garmin units, so you won't be able to load huge areas to it

I think i may need to wait until my new PC arrives./forums/images/icons/laugh.gif

QUESTION......

The 'Mapsourse' City Navigator Cd rom that comes with the Streetpilot 2610, after unlocking it and downloading it onto the SP 2610, will i then be able to download it also on to the GPSMAP 76?

Or do i need to buy another unlock code?

Cheers Dave,

The letters are nice and big, aren't they?/forums/images/icons/laugh.gif And i suppose begin with an 'L' then possible 54-- or 55 something??, Mine begins with an 'A'.

Look forward to meeting you, and SWMBO. Let me know nearer the time when you are coming, And BTW where are you staying?

You are right about the batteries, i went through the first set, just trying to get a satellite fix. I also got a 12v adaptor for it, so when in the car or boat, it runs of mains power, which should save the batteries.

Cheers

Alistair.
