Can't get my Garmin GPS 128 to download waypoints to a laptop: using GRMN-GRMN 4800 or 9600 and several different softwares; pin-outs are correct. Possibly a problem with having to use a USB-serial adaptor (no serial port) - ?

Has anyone any suggestions of download (& upload) software and USB-serial adaptors that definitely work together?

Thanks

Alan

For gawd sake don't use the very overpriced and obsolete serial to USB cable garmin sell. By a cheapo one from Maplins (about 12quid) The driver for the one Garmin sell does not work with Windows XP. I use a Garmin to USB on my laptop to input GPS to my Winchart Nexus which uses C-Map and it works fine now but was a-holes to breakfast time with the Garmin converter cable. Turns out that the driver only works on Windows 2000 but Garmin UK insist it is Microsofts problem total Bollix!

Using a cheapo USB -> Serial adapter I can transfer waypoints etc etc between either Garmin Etrex or our fixed Garmin 152 ... no probs! ...
