gps to lap top (laptop cutingoff)

i am ready for throwing the lot out the window,magellan310 hand held is conectet to the laptop with pc cable with usb to rs-232 adaptor every time when i configure gps the lap top switches off at first it said no signal is being rieceved and now this

Have you checked to see that the interface protocols are correct. ie. what does your program require NMEA-NMEA?, Magellan-Magellan?, Magellan-NMEA? & a host of other possibilities.

As far as the Puter turning off goes could be a multitude of bugs in your programs or possibly an interupt request conflict.

Try uninstalling the programs & then starty again.

i dont know how to check setings on the gps ,i have tried reinstaling the software for the adaptor and it sounds like somethins short circuting when the pc cuts off but it is ok without the gps wirec conected
 
The interface settings should be in one of the setup menu's on your GPS. I can only suggest that you start there, or as they say read the *** Manual. Your software on your puter should give you some indications of the setup it likes.

Sounds like a conflict of Interrupts ....

Have USB to Serial cable connected .... do not switch on GPS ... Have PC on and then go to device manager .... check listing of ports .... you should see a USB to serial listing .... check its properties ..... it may be interfering with another item ......... and will show conflict. If so then assign a different Interrupt etc.

Other than that ?????

Hi johns, In my Garmin handbook are full details for setting the GPS. The settings to use may be determined by chart software (see settings) and or your USB/ rs232 driver prog see notes in packaging. NMEA/NMEA is apparantly the best one to try first, 4800 baud and something with a 2.0
I don't know if I should be starting a separate thread but as I suspect a similar problem I'll now list my own problem.
Mine worked great last year, this year not at all, both Magellan and Sailware? are set to com port 4 but say GPS is not connected. Over the winter I updated my windows XP 2nd edition?( i Think) and installed Norton . I've used system restore to go back before Norton and I've tried reinstalling the USB driver several times. The laptop now tells me the driver is in com port 11 but I've only 4 USB ports (are they the same thing?)
The cable is USB Serial Converter, Product 1.1 It isn't windows supported but worked fine last year. The manufacturers website is under reconstruction?? The product is still on sale on several websites.
Can anybody shed a little light????

RS232 uses up to 4 ports ..... Com 1 - 4

USB can assign by software a large number - Virtual ports .... mine shows anything up to Com 14 etc. depending on what is plugged in ...

Now we get to the interesting part as many chart programs haven't kept pace with XP .... and only allow a choice of Com 1- 4 .....

Check the Device Manager and see what com is assigned to the USB - Serial cable .... then see if you can asign same in chart software ... if not - then you have to try and swap com setting on the cable.

I hate XP for this ..... I wish that there was way to LOCK the com port setting on the cable - so that once assigned in device manager and set in the chart program - it should stay ..... but no - Bill Gates decided that it is disabled and should be dynamic .... assigned itself ....

Thanks Nigel. That sounds interesting, Ive tried reassigning the com port on the maptech(I think) but it still did'nt recognise that the GPS was there.
1 Can I overide windows and assign Com port 4 to the cable?. If so, any starters for 10
I've searched the 'help' without seeing anything
2. Is that what you meant by different interrupts?

you can go to device manager and tell it to use what com port you like ..... BUT it must be same as the one that is assigned in the charting program. If you assign a different com port to the one that windows chose - do not be surprised if Windoze puts it back to its own choice next time you reboot pc ....

I can also tell you Maptech older versions are notorious for lack of com port settings ... only having 1 - 4 ... later versions having corrected it.

My advise .... TRY and stay with one of the com 1 thru 4 ports ... making sure that Maptech is set to same. Then you have far more chance of Windoze not playing games with you .... untill you connect 3 or 4 other USB items !!

Now thats a point .... how many USB items have you got connected ?? Try removing down to the minimum, try using different USB sockets if you have them .... keep going until you get some joy !! Checking of course the com port assigned in device manager .... each time .... its possible to watch it do it .... open device manager .... click on ports .... now disconnect your usb to serial cable ... one port will now disapear !! Now reconnect it .... voila its back again .... but restart the pc before trying to use it !!
 
I have twice seen a GPS being recognised by Windows XP as a mouse, one of which was with a USB to serial converter. In these cases the cursor simply jumped around all over the place, but I suppose it's not impossible it has other effects.
This "mouse" did show up when we looked at Device Manager and the solution was to disable it, not uninstall it. Uninstalling the mouse just resulted in Windows ever-so-helpfully reinstalling it whenever we plugged it back in. Make sure you disable the right mouse of course!

I suspect this isn't the problem but thought I'd mention it just in case.

I re-installed the USB converter, windows assigned it to com 11, then I went to device manager, properties, advance settings and changed it to com port 4 - same as chart software (Ignoring windows threats of doom)--- and it works.
turned the comp off and on and cable stayed allocated to com port 4.
