i was thinking of mounting my aerial on the 4" ledge on the transom, but this would be under the stainless pushpit rail. was wondering if signal would be affected by the s/s 1" rail. has anybody any experience of this.

Would not think pulpit would affect the arial as most are mounted on the pushpit but if you are intending to mount it on the transom i would think it would be vulnerable to damage from ropes etc.

Mines fitted on the middle rail of the pushpit, so it gets a certain amount of protection from the upper rail. Usually works OK, sometimes gets "NO DATA" but soon reverts to normal. I've put it down the very old GPS - Magellan 5000.

I'd rather be sailing...

I fitted one only last weekend and opted for the top rail of the pushpit - but I think I will try moving it down to the middle rail and see how it performs as it's a lot more protected there. If it needs to go back up to the top rail it's only a 2 min. job as I have fitted on of those deck glands that allows you to feed the cable in and out fairly easily.

In agreement with most posts below mine is located on mid rail after origonally on top.
no dicernable difference in performance and checking the sat signal strengths no visible change between positions.
