Hi

Any one who knows were/if it is possible to find GPS positions of Oil Rigs in the Northern Sea on the internet?

We'll be sailing from the English channel to the Kiel channel starting next Thursday.

as far as I can see at present, there are 5 jackup rigs working in the Dutch sector of the North Sea. Most, if not all of these, will be working over platforms which should be marked on any up to date chart. Further north I don't think there is anything until you get into Danish waters. UK waters may be a little different, but not much exploration or new development underway at the moment.

You'll see them miles away, lit up like Blackpool. They have stand by vessels that will make sure you keep 500m from them. Mind you some years ago I was on one and a German yacht ignored the SBV and sailed between us and a tug towing us... unbelievable but true, went right over a steel hawser. Not sure if the mobile units have AIS.

They are supposed to but heaven only knows what they may be transmitting /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

The rigs are as you say well lit and can often be apparent from the loom of the lights before you see the actual rigs. Many are on oilfields and thes appear as mini cities at night!

All rig positions where stationary or mobile units will/must be on "notice to mariners" or the relevant charts for that area. dont know how you get that info, but I guess the chart folks/coastguard would have the info or they should.

Thank you for the answers.

I followed up the tips to check "notice to mariners" and found a RIGLIST. I hope that most of them are covered.

Please be aware that Platforms are fixed. Other types (Semi-Sub, Jack-up etc) are mobile and may be encountered almost anywhere (within reason) whilst in transit to or from locations.

Don't rely on the standby boat/guard vessel to wake you up either. I once watched a 30(ish) footer sail by us about 20 yards off our Starboard/Fwd Leg on a course about 45 deg to ours. Nobody in the cockpit, tiller pilot happily doing it's thing. We weren't in the middle of nowhere, we were on the edge of the Brae Field, a rather large development about the same area as a large city...........
