I am planning to purchase a Furuno 1650F (C-Map version)or Navman 5500 chartplotter, where is the cheapest place to by it in the UK?
Has anyone had any problems with either model?,I am worried that as the Navman is made in New Zealand after sales could be a problem!
Does anyone recommend an alternative in the price range
I am planning a trip also to the USA anybody see any problem to buying over there?

Happy sailing

Bought my Raymarine Raynav 300 a couple of months ago in the USA. I ordered it online from here and had it delivered to mother-in-law. Wife wasn't happy but it saved £80.

I have the Navman 5500 and have been very impressed. I bought mine in the States with the correct C Map for english channel. Dollars for pounds, so it almost pays to go there just for the plotter!!!! And yes I did declare it to Customs and they were very fair to me. (At the same flight someone tried to bring in a new very expenssive camera system and had it confiscated!)

Hi just reading your post reply.
I have just put a deposit down on a 1976 Moody 30. (lots of expenses comming up!!!)

It has a lot of kit but most of it dated, I have almost covinced myself to get a new DSC radio, but I wanted to get in particular, some intruments for the bulkhead (NICE BIG BRIGHT ONES !!! age you know) and was also impressed with the Navman 3100 series... but vey costly!

Are you saying that it would be worth ordering electronic kit from the states and paying the duty?

If yes who would you go to???

I have not ordered items from USA, but have collected items when visiting relatives! I have had good service from an outlet of www.boatersworld.com in Florida. www.pyacht.net has been very prompt at answering and will certainly ship to UK, but by air only. I have found www.vitmarine.com to be by far the cheapest, but have been totally unimpressed with their response to email, so would not consider using them.

For instruments if you want reasonable set and at acceptable price try the silva star wind and data set abt £300 for all three from Seamark Nunn - I have them and am happy with them, they do talk to each other, but not NMEA.

I bought my Garmin 2010 from Cactus. Their listed price was competitive and I negotiated a further reduction over the phone.

IMHO it is important to select a supplier who can assist with technical queries before and after purchase and, most important, who have a buyer-friendly policy in the event of problems. Cactus appear to satisfy these requirements, as I'm sure do others, but my experience with Compass has been very poor. My new Navtex Clipper failed in the 3rd week of July and was returned to them immediately. I still do not have it back.

I agree, but I would add that their UK office, at least, is also very helpful by telephone. I spent quite a lot of time on the telephone to them before buying my new set and they couldn't have been more accommodating to my wide range of questions.

Hmm, reminds me of an experience about 30 yr ago when I was caught at customs w/quite expensive camera. Fined 150 quid, confiscated, but able to buy it back 28 days later for additional 150 quid. Only cost 150 quid in Seychelles in first place. Learned my lesson - always declared stuff since and normally am let off with nothing to pay, or small duty charge.

As I was coming through with a new underwater camera housing as well as the chart plotter, custom cost me a fair chunk of hard earned dough - but it was still much cheaper than buying in UK (by more than the cost of the airline tickets for the two of us!!!!!!)

I bought a Navman 5500i with built in gps just before our summer cruise this year. We already had a 10" B/W plotter at the nav table, this was to be a stand alone one in the cockpit, not connected to the instruments and connected to a different battery bank from our main GPS/instrument systems. It is fully waterproof so is mounted on the coachroof, two positions (I bought a second spare mount) either on the instrument console over the hatch or back on the coachroof top nearer the wheel. I am most impressed, it is easy and mostly intuitive to use, very clear and when used as a data display (chose your own info from COG,SOG, BTW, VMG to WP, Distance to WPT, ETA, Time etc) it can be read from almost anywhere in our large cockpit. I bought ours from MES for £629.95 with a free C-Map local size chart cartridge and a 50% disscount on PC-Planner, the C-Map gizmo that lets you use their cartridges on your PC. I transferred all existing WPs & routes from the 10" plotter to the Navman using their respective user cartridges via the PC-Planner - if both old and new plotters had the same size user cartridge this could have been done without PC-Planner but this is a nice gizmo to have anyway for passage planning at home.
