They shouldn't be allowed to do it at all - GPS has become a public service that people use for all sorts of things. Its s bit like the council removing all the road signs for a week.

Could be worse. They could be jamming the signal in England.

What are the symptoms?

Okay, I'm in Skye near the S end of that area I think. If the jamming spills over their announced area, what might my gps do? Would it not get any fix at all? Or could it show a false, misleading fix?

Anyone got a clue what to look out for?

Symptoms will depend on your GPS receiver. Hopefully you will get a warning message. Otherwise the first sign of change would an erratic or zero SOG reading

....... JAMMING EVENTS ..... LOWER: SFC
UPPER: 40000FT AMSL .....

Does this mean that a guidance system relying on GPS above 40,000 ft would be okay and can jamming be carried with lower elevation limits, say 10,000 ft?

For example could the military have an air corridor to launch through while restricting ground based GPS from working?

My phone is now ringing!

If ever you get an idle moment, log onto an AIS service, which is 'live' and follow the track of a middle eastern warship by the name of Al Shamikh whose call-sign is 2DCU4.

It is often transmitting AIS which will suddenly be at the top of Fareham Creek, Haslar Marina a second or two later, then in Port Solent and a moment later out in Stokes Bay. This can go on for an hour or two at a time, totally random points and will track across a chart-plotter until it is covered in tracks looking more like an "Etch-a-Sketch" which needs to be turned upside down and shaken.

It is currently residing in the top of Portsmouth Harbour in dock.

It tells me that the MOD are using Yagis, probably stacked and bayed arrays within the 'L'-Band for very directional transmissions and for very specific tests.

The antenna elevation would give the height and the erp would give path-loss at ~1600MHz hence range and simple maths would give a 6dB 'beam-width' at 40,000 feet, if you follow what I am saying? ;)
