Before buying a boat I want a GPS to learn and practice navigation. As a beginner I am not sure what I am after. It doesn't need to do everything as I assume I will get/put a plotter on the boat but after looking at the web sites I am fairly confused. Is there anything I should be looking for? Is there any real difference between Garmin and Magellan?
Thanks for your help

strong recomendation to by a handheld with a YEOMAN PLOTTER.

this will let you play on paper and gps and get a real feel for whats going on.

Personally I like Garmin.

Even an old Garmin 45 secondhand will do.

Cheap Garmin secondhand fine (as long as it is still working) as they have a nice training/simulator mode to save the batteries while you work out what is going on.

Others like the Magellan interface but imho no contest - Garmin

I have a Garmin GPS 12 handheld, its done me well for 3 years, i cannot fault garmin handhelds! dead easy to use as well.

BUT you dont want to become dependant on GPS, they can go wrong!!

Get a garmin 175c. Handheld plotter. So you can practise in the car, or walking in the park, on planes, on a ferry, etc. The 175 is a totally excellent bit of kit, takes bluecharts

PS I have spare bluechart W coast Scotland for sale

I have a Garmin 67 as a back up. Can't praise it enough. It has loads of features and is very easy to use. I tend to set it in rolling road mode and watch that rather than my plotter.
