I've just bought a garmin Etrex handheld. It tracks 12 satelites, runs for 22 hours on 2 AA bateries. Has option of NEMA data cable, Computer cable or external 12V power cable. Its waterproof and it floats so you can use it in the cockpit. Take it home and enter waypoints for your next trip. Costs £115

It also has a lanyard to tie it on.

I couldn't find a reasonably priced fixed unit to match it but others may be able to advise.

As per Twisted_ken said, it depends on what else you do. I do a lot of hiking and 4WDing so a handheld is far more sensible as I can't afford two units. As mentioned by one of the other replyees, I also take it to work so I can load/store all the waypoints I need for the coming weekends exploration from my PC.

Cheers

Best of both worlds

I use a HH:
- can take it on hike in winter
- can hook it to the PC at home
- cheaper than fixed unit
- same software engine as fixed unit

BUT:

I installed a Clipper GPS repeater on the dashboard: the HH stays inside at the cardtable, while the displays stil gives me SOG, BRG, DST and COG :)

Re: Best of both worlds

Agree completely, The H/H with the clipper repeater is an excellent set up.

I think Silva also make a repeater around the same money which might be worth checking out.
