Anyone out there who is a real techie on GPS that can answer a question for me please.

I have been told that the geo-stationary satellites can now receive signals for relaying as well as send the CA and P codes, is this at all true under none military circumstances?

Apparently this is a new thing but I am very doubtful and I need to challenge my source for a project I am working on.

Thanks.

There is an article at http://www.gpsworld.com/ regarding Inmarsat's New Navigation Payload whereby Geostationary satellites (GEOs) can augment the performance of GPS by providing a separate ranging channel to transmit integrity and correction data. Maybe this contains the info you want.

I don't think the satellites used to provide GPS service are geostationary. I believe that they are at about half geostationary altitude.

This would mean that any up-link to a satellite would have to track the bird and manage hand-over to an alternative as the original satellite dropped below the horizon.
