I now need to get a gps, what thoughts on which type of gps I should get? what do forumites think of something like an old garmin 45?
cheers

I use a Garmin 12XL with my Yeoman Sport plotter. Operates well inside boat, uploads waypoints and is happy with external power. I have one from new and also one bought on ebay. I can thoroughly recommend them.

Garmin 76 - basic device, but can be used with an external aerial, and with 12v feed, and has both usb and serial connection leads.

The Garmin 45 should work OK. I still have my old 45 and will not part with it as it was my 'first'. Soppy git, arnt I?

The problem with a 45 is two fold. Firstly it does not have an external Aeriel, its not very good at picking up a signal tucked away down below either.

Secondly, it is only 8 channel, today 12 channel is the norm, this gives faster fix and more accuracy.

So with that in mind, yes use the 45, it is waterproof so you could run a longer lead and pop it on the coach roof, but start looking for a replacement, put it on your want list.

I use a Garmin 152 GPS, one of only a few just a GPS units available today, most are chart plotters now. There is a argument for buying an up to date hand held GPS though. If you need to abandon to the life raft, it can go in the grab bag, you cant do that with a fixed GPS.

I use this too (basic Garmin12 model) and keep another on board in case of need. Simple, effective and the whole kit is easily portable from boat to boat (Yeoman Sport)

Both my Garmin 45 (12 years old) and Garmin 12 (don't know how old but bought on e-bay last year) drive my Yeoman Sport perfectly. I have fitted a sort-of bus bar data line through the boat which transmits the GPS data to my Tillerpilot 20 and to the ICOM 505 GMDS radio as well as to the Yeoman. Yeoman excellent at putting way points into the GPS - biggest source of all my navigational errors previously.

Don't forget that Yeoman can upgrade your plotter and supply its own ariel so that your system is indipendant. I have just done this - but found it expensive !
