I have a Garmin GPS 180 that came with the boat which is fitted under the sprayhood and the power/data cable was cut to that length. Does anyone know if it is possible to get an extension lead (i.e male one end, female t'other) so that I can move it nearer the helm when I want to ????

totally agree. A quick visit to maplin with a sample of the existing cable to get the correct extension, then soldering iron + heatshrink - worked for me!

old mouse leads ... give serial plug .... tel cable and sockets ... multi-core cable .... I've used all sorts .... there is no rocket science to this ..... >>

The beauty of the tel socket one - is that doubling up, adding items is dead easy .... DIY tel kits are available all over the high street ....

A point that many forget - is that you can touch wires to terminals to find which ones work etc. as long as you don't put NMEA to power .... it is supposed to withstand wrong connection - and each system I have knocked up - shows me this is correct.

Re: gps extension lead .... forgot to add ...

If its just to lengthen the cable ............ simple multi-core tel cable from maplins and a screw block or other multi-contact junction is good enough.

Hi again, and thanks to you all for your replies, and sorry I didn't reply sooner, but left the comfort of Beaucettes' wifi and have only just got connection back after cruising. need a second connection so that I have a choice of location so will get the lead and add it in to the system. /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif
