I'm fed up with short battery life in my Garmin Map 72 gps which is used mainly to feed the VHF set. So I bought a data power lead for the gps. Question; Is there any great problem if I use the power supply to the vhf for the gps? That is the simplest physically. There is a spare circuit on the switch panel which could be used, at the price of running new supply cables across the boat, which is relatively complex given the layout and existing cable runs.
What do you think?

No no problem at all. Individual switched and fused circuits are used so that if there is a fuse failure on one circuit it will not affect the other circuits. And of course individual switching is necessary for systems not having their own switch like nav lights bilge pump etc.
Just as long as you label the fuse/switch and or rememeber that VHF also means GPS no probs. olewill
