Hi,

Am off to south coast for a few weeks in a few weeks. So this morning i checked the Furuno to see how far the charts went. Ah! it runs out at Brighton. No probs, call up supplier and guess what...I have an old Furuno Navnet1 and uses Navionics Classic charts. The Brighton to Dart Price £250 !!......and to make matters worse the latest edition (cos its a defunked fomat) is a 2009 chart..

So the dilemma is

Buy the old chart that will give me basic (out of date) chart but allows me to carry on using Furuno with all auto pilot, radar over lay etc ect through holiday

or

Spend the money on a new wizzy handheld ( and if so which one?) and use combination of this and furuno to get by..

Any ithoughts?

P.S. spending several k to upgrade entire system not an option

I don't know your particular plotter, but I have a similar situation with an old Garmin, for which I don't have the charts, and the likelyhood of finding them is slim.

but without charts, it still functions as a GPS with all functions, waypoints, routes etc, just no detailed chart.

So At home I have Open CPN on my PC, use that to plan a route, then download the waypoints and route to the Garmin. I also print chartlets of where I'm going so I have a paper copy as well.

Perhaps thats the best way to use the old plotter?

Any ithoughts?

Yup, dont waste your money. Buy the 2009 cartridge and an up to date paper chart. I guarantee that anything you are likely to hit was there in 2009:)
(except maybe that new bit of sand near the Shingles Bank but knowing how useless Navionics are, it probably wont be shown on a 2011 cartridge either)

Thanks

yeah I think thats the same conclusion i had come to. I do like a fresh papaer chart anyway as rarely do the planning work on the electronics, and i do get a bit nervy when just looking at a position on a blank screen...so even an old chart is nice to give a rough visual...Nice to have someone else agree with you though.
