Hi all,

I don't have a problem with GPS or Navigation issues, but due to forum limitations and the lack of a good general GPS/Navigation thread for newbies to use, I thought I should put one together.

Have a GPS/Navigation query, want it answered? Post it here and hopefully someone with the know-how will drop by and lend a hand.

(This thread was created to allow a newbie to post a problem and I couldn't find a suitable thread for them to hijack >.<)

Why do they need a suitable thread to hijack? They just start one and ask the question or go to the library/bookshop and get a book/research it online or do a course. If they are really interested in the subject join the Royal Institute of Navigation.

Because they were such a new newbie they hadn't got the permissions needed to start threads. And yes, there are plenty of alternative ways of getting answers, but why not start here?

Hi and thanks for the help.
I would go to the library but find the internet is so much quicker :)
My problem: i have a seatalk 120 gps connecting to a SL70C raymarine pathfinder and also a sc600 tri data box. The gps has failed to find fix and after changing the onboard battery still no joy. I need to connect an off the shelf nmea gps into the syste. Somehow and could do with an easy solution. I do have a spare seatalk input on the sc600 but not sure if that helps?
All of the wiring loom is difficult to access as its in a targa 40.

Replied to your post today, copied and pasted here as well.

Digital yacht do a converter...https://digitalyacht.co.uk/product/st-nmea-iso/ I had the same problem as yourself and couldn't find a replacement Raystar 120.
Now, I bought the converter just over a month ago as I wanted to join the seatalk network where the Raystar did, also bought a NMEA GPS , They sell as a bundle, https://digitalyacht.co.uk/product/st-nmea-gps/
It would save a lot of hassle and upsidedowness if I could do this.
Unfortunately, it didn't work as it transposed the longitude and the boat was apparently in Chertsey instead of Cuxton.
Got in touch and they looked into it and promptly gave and me a soloution, unfortunately it didn't work.
Got back to them and they looked into it again and they found a fundamental fault and developed a firmware update.
I sent the converter to them for the update and should be re fitting it this weekend, I'll let you know how it goes.
They have now updated all the converters in stock.
Digital Yacht have acted in a professional way during this and I've had good communication with them and I think this has just been one of those unfortunate glitches.
