Last weekend I tried my new Garmin GPS 152 for the first time.
We went out of the marina for a spin and I activated the track saving function.
On the map screen, the track was visible in great detail as a dotted line.
After having been on anchor the afternoon, I activated the track back function.
On the map screen and on the highway screen, the track to be steered was visible as the dotted line but the arrow kept pointing at the position of the marina and not to the course to be steered.

I read the book 4 times but could not find how to get an arrow that gives the direction to follow the same track back to the marina?

Is this impossible or do I have to read the book again?

Any input is, as usually, highly appreciated!

Hi

On a garmin 128 both the screens you mentioned pointed to the "GoTo" reference as opposed to the course used to get there.
If you used the "GoTo" option and select the last waypoint before you anchored I think you'll find the screen will point to that.

Can be a bit disconcerting when your told that your heading should be over the headland.

Phil,
Thanks. Does it mean, that although the GPS knows exactly the track I sailed to the anchoring place it can not guide me back via the same track with the arrow?
I thought it would be possible to go back with an imaginary zero visibility?

In theory, if you clear the track log, then make a journey, by choosing "trackback" you should get a route set up in route 0 (the active route page) with up to 30 waypoints guiding you back over the track just created. This did not seem to work properly on my Garmin 128 either and I found that I had to save waypoints using the "mark" function at every turn. I gave up with the "trackback".

Re: Did you save the TracBack route?

pvb,
I think I did, the system saved it as the date.
If I did it wrong, would the track have been visible as a dotted line in the map screen? Do you have to stop recording the track when you go back or does this happen automatically when you choose track back?
Do you think it should be possible at all?

Regards, Jan

On my Garmin 152 when I save a track and activate the Trackback, the course to steer is broken down into a series of 'turns'. I haven't noticed what happens on the GPS itself, but certainly my NASA GPS repeater guides you back through Turn1, Turn2, Turn3 etc. I've never managed to get my AUtohelm ST1000+ to follow the track though.

Re: Did you save the TracBack route?

It should have saved it as a route of up to 30 waypoints, called Turn 1, Turn 2, etc. Maybe this is one of those functions which needs doing with the Garmin owner's manual in one hand!

Re: Did you save the TracBack route?

Thanks all!
I will give it another try next weekend.
Last night I took a look at the handbook in the English language and found, that this is more complete than the Dutch translation that came with the GPS.
I think I will change the language in the GPS to English and use it with the English handbook.
Like wicked and pvb said, the turns should be numbered and this is mentioned in the English book but not in the Dutch version!

I will let you know the result next week!

Thanks again,
Jan
