I discovered on Wednesday morning that Vodafone Ireland have decided to charge €20 (euro in case the currency does not show) per megabyte. So that afternoon I changed my account to O2 who charge €2 per megabyte. As O2 had set their prices first I can only assume that Vodafone don't wamt to sell their GPRS service.

Re: GPRS works - I agree

After months of hassle with Otenet, Panafon et al I signed up on Vodafone's GPRS (now you can have a zero monthly sub (i.e. Pay as you use) and it is wonderful. In Greece connects first time and no wires with my T260. As for cost - no idea - just prepare to pay through the nose but at least you are not paying while "thinking"! Frankly I am a believer that all these gadgets are great for email and forget Internet surfing unless desperate for the info. Final thought. Stupidly (or was it) I left my power cable behind in UK on a recent two week cruise of Ionian Islands so was "forced" not to log on. Having got back and rushed to my laptop for those exciting emails in my Inbox did I miss anything? Absolutely not! I must "remember" to forget my compuyter again next time.

After three years of use I can still confidently claim that a standard mobile connected to a local service provider and to a local ISP through your lap top or PC is quicker and a lot cheaper than your system. A weather chart, downloading in under 50 secs onto a 15" LCD screen is worth looking at but unreable on a mobile screen.

If you think about how much a text message can cost in the UK then just accept that you are going to be charged considerably more for what is a very limited service.

In Spain, currently paying 12cents a minute for a full connection to the internet via the PC at speeds of no less than 9600.

I'm a bit late responding to this - I thought the subject had died down.

I am not sure what your question is - I got details from Vodafone (and more recently O2) that take the place of the phone number you would use if calling from a PC with an ordinary modem.

These details go into the Motorola software on my PC and I don't need to see them again. I just double click on the icon to make a connection.

I think (I am not at my own PC now) there may also be some settings for Internet Explorer.

For regular use I just start the GPRS connection and when it is "active" I start Internet Explorer and can access the internet and email just as if I had a land line.

I am told (by someone who has a land line) that my PC connected to the GPRS phone performs as well as a regular land line connection.

Certainly the GPRS connection is expensive at €2 per megabyte (with O2). Vodafone charges 10 times that - yes €20 per megabyte - so after a first bill for €266 (when I didn't know the price as the service was new) I switched to O2.

On the other hand the T280 phone only cost the same as a land line connection and I would have had the inconvenience of wiring the land line to my boat at the pontoon - and moving the wiring when I re-position the boat for the winter.

And I downloaded some "free" software updates the other night - costing about €5 - not excessive if you don't do it all day and all night.

Hi Colvic

I am presently in spain, Ibiza, and will be for the next few months. I am about to buy the SIm card as I agree with you on costs, so could you let me know which ISP you are using as that sounds like a great deal !

Steve

PS Ideally could you send me an email to steve_derbsyhire@yahoo.co.uk, thanks.

Re: GPRS connection code/string

Late replying but you should not need any connection string. Vodfone uses *99# (should you need to manually imput it) but it is all set up automatically in the Connect Me icon which appears on your Desktop after installing the software for GPRS. The beauty of the *99# is that it works in UK or Greece (and I imagine other countrie too) without having to change any settings when you leave, for instance, UK. I tried it in UK, arrived in Greece, clicked on the same icon and hey presto instant connection and at about 44,000 bps. Hope this helps.
Kalinka
PS: By next year you may forget all this as G3 is imminent and that's another story - and faster again.
