Does anyone know of a GPRS pay-as-you-go SIM for data (GPRS) that we can buy locally in Spain to use alongside the laptop? We have an unlocked phone already. If, so, any ideas on data costs, do you need a local address etc?
Telefonica do a GPRS PCMCIA card; cost will be about 120 to 150€'s but be warned that your data costs, whoever the provider, will be high (and under no circumstances whatsover go and buy via Vodaphone.)
One other option is to use GPRS via a bluetooth enabled phone (eg Nokia 6310i) and bluetooth on the laptop. If the laptop isn't bluetooth enabled then a bluetooth USB adaptor is about 20€'s.
Better option, and certainly cheaper than GPRS, would be wifi. Lots of wifi hotspots and many cyber cafes where you can take your laptop and connect. Cyber cafe charges nominally between 1.5 and 2.5€'s an hour
Movistar do a PasYgo sim card which is 23€ of which 19€ is credit.
It works with their own GPRS stream. I used the Nokia program (free to download) and it worked a treat
I have several Movistar PAYG sim cards and a Nokia phone with bluetooth and would like to experiment. My Movistar manual is unclear about how to set this up and does not give the costs.
Do you know what the costs are for the data (time, MBits?)
Which Nokia program were you referring to?
Can you point me to the instructions to set this up for PAYG?
I know I've been saying this for years now, but be very careful with Vodafone. Both UK and Spain (we have "experience" with both) They siphoned thousands from our bank account incorrectly, on a GPRS PCMCIA card contract. And/or tried to.
Pay as You Go sounds like a much better, safer, alternative. Limit your exposure to these b*** !!!!
