I have asked the question of my UK provider - O2

They say I don't need to do anything to my connections - it will work with 2 French providers no problem - costs are though - c £8 / megabite. Apparently in Spain its about £21 /megabite. Might have to go back to dialing via my Bougues PAYG account!

£21 p/mb is a rip off. Orange charge £10 p/mb almost the world over except hong kong where it is £25.
Maybe look to change your service provider?

dunno abt pay as you go gprs. I was using a British Orange SPV in rural France earlier this year and had no problems at all downloading my emails onto it. Then I have a French pay as you go Orange phone for receiving calls.
