An alarm has been raised in Corfu, as sailboats are burning in the marina of Gouvia.

In particular, four sailing boats have already been engulfed in flames in the marina of Gouvia, when for an unknown reason, a 20-meter sailing boat that was docked, shortly after 4 pm, caught fire which spread very quickly to adjacent boats.

A large force of the Fire Department rushed to the area with five fire engines, while help is also expected from Igoumenitsa.

Firefighters are fighting to remove boats to prevent the fire from spreading further.

It should be noted that the marina of Gouvia is one of the largest in Greece, as it has a capacity of 960 boats, with fixed and floating piers.

Eeek. The video shows my old berth - away from the seat of the fire but sobering nonetheless…

Hope that they get it under control quickly and no one gets hurt.
Our old berth looks just a couple of boats away from the fire. Scary stuff.

The latest is that the Fire started on the 70' Motor Boat, spread to the Large Cat alongside, then to another boat, which I didn't see, and finally to the 70 foot wooded classic 'Halcyon'
All on the outer side of P Pontoon.
All four are now at the bottom of the Marina.
Sam & his mate from a local Carter Company were the stars. They were first to start moving the nearby boats, away from the fire/pontoon and eventually (when they stopped filming) other joined in to help them.

Great pics, Cariadco. My yacht is berthed on pontoon 'O', next to 'P', and you can just make out the top of the mast above the smoke in some of the photos. I was blissfully unaware at the time, being on the ferry back from Ancona to Corfu. As I climbed aboard in the dark later the same evening, I did wonder at all the black specks on my deck. It was only then I noticed the chaos nearby.

The wrecks have been lifted off the seabed, and the Wooden Ketch is now being prepared.
This morning, they chain sawed the Masts off.
The first attempt at raising Halcyon was a failure! They got it as far as my pic below, then on the next heave the forward strop broke and the yacht slid back down to the bottom again, for a moment its stern high in the air like the stills of the Titanic.

We'd hoped it might be salvageable, but first sight shows it is almost certainly beyond repair.

Spent a day crewing on theHalcyon whilst under loan to a college on the Hamble, fine vessel

What a shock, very sad, a wonderful boat. I did some research on her years ago and spoke to a gentleman who sailed on her in the 1930's, he told me of visits to France and watching the Schneider Trophy seaplane races, I think that must have been 1931. I had a day on board at Milford Haven, late 1990's.
The first owner Sir Sam Turner, a Rochdale industrialist, learned his sailing in St Ives. The boat he sailed on, Halcyon, is still around somewhere having been extensively refurbished some years ago. A friend used to own her.

Here you go:

Roving Commissions - Shipwrights - Half Decked Gaff Cutter Halcyon - Boat builders - Restoration

Bits of that text were written by me, God knows how it got there!

It might be repairable, but will cost a massive fortune. Expect she will be broken up. What a shame.

Where's Leo Sampson when you need him?

As I write, I can see a digger has just started to break up the hull. So sadly, no reprieve.

Judging by what he's done on Tally Ho, that'd just save him some time
