Wonder if its just me or is getting a boat delivered impossible to manage smoothly?

This January after about 6 months looking, my wife and I finally bought a boat' Bought from a great broker in Northern Ireland. And the weather had been so amazing we considered getting it delivered to Devon by sea.

The day we returned from Belfast the storms started... I think its an omen. Weeks passed and the weather remained crap. So our next step was to consider sailing her to Liverpool then by road. Waited again for a good weather window.... notthing but gales and rain... lovely.....

Finally with the brokers help we arranged to have her trucked all the way from Belfast. First though she needed to be moved froim Strangford Lough to Carrickfergus, againe more lovely gales. Eventually a brief window opened last week and a skipper did the run punching straight into a force 6 (boat did very well apparently, which is pleasing) Though the fact the batteries had gone bad between the time I bought and then and needed replacing was less good....

Got her snugged up and safe in Carrick until yesterday when the lorry guys picked her up and headed here. Took the day off, all very excited.. And went down to the quay at 3 pm, Theiur rough ETAm dependant on getting a police escort into the city. The crane shwoed up about 3.30. It was too small and had no spreaders.. so I sent it away and asked for a bigger crane, which was a couple of hours away.

Fair enough, The lorry had arrived at Exeter and was waiting for the police to show up.

Sat in rain by canal, waiting for cranes boats and police to arrive.

Crane shows up at about 4.45 yeah.. A call to the police informs me the boat is still there. They can't find anyone to make the run... meanwhile I have seen 4 police cars driving up and down while sitting in the rain. *grrrrr*

A while later the driver calls. The police have called and told him they won't let him in the city until the rush has cleared (about 7.00). Poor sods have been stuck in a layby since 3.30. Crane drivers won't work in the dark. So here I sit.. this bloody boat some 15 minute drive away, a crane on the quay, (which I am paying for!). And worst of all the pub close by was shut...

And of course the lorry drivers have a boat to pick up tomorrow in Southampton tomorrow at 9am.

So all in all a crap day.. That's my rant over... On the bright side she hasn't sunk.. yet

Can't wait for tomorrow morning... 7 am start to get the thing in the water so the lorry guys can make their return trip. Hoprfully tomorrow I will retract all this and all will be weell again.... course I expect the crane will fall in the water of something.. or get pinched tonight...

Next boat I buy is going to be local.... and to think I considered buying one in Spain......

Regards,

Nick

So what do the Police charge for escort?

Just asking as it uses up a lot of their manpower? Glad you got the boat where you needed it.

Bought boat two years ago, negotiated the use of The Hamble mooring until the end of September (fabulous). Husband arranged eager crew of enthusiasts for 1st October to sail to her new home on the East Coast. Engine failed with great emotion off Gosport. Towed back to the mooring. Drove down to pick up crew. Engineers decend - slowly. Suck through teeth.

Worst winter gales ever start. Search and Rescue Navigator does two days crewing between Christmas and New year so get to Eastbourne. Wonder who is doing Search and Rescue if he on boat? Said never been so cold in his life even on Arctic exercise and at one point considered sharing sleeping bag with Husband. Must have been cold.

January - no crew would come as weather even worse. Boat now nightmare not dream, visitors mooring costs escalating.

Husband decides easier to get someone to look after the children than crew boat. Find myself arriving Eastbourne in early January. Taxi driver asks what most frightening thing ever done with boat. I retort - Writing Cheque to Buy It. He said should be TV with witlike that. I do not do The Channel in winter - rigid with fear, then bored silly as no wind at all. Motored into firing range, Succum to pneumonia on passage so stop at Dover. Decide I am dying (and only out one day). Wait three hours for train home lying on floor of station buffet.

Get home. Off sick two weeks. Rise from bed to find Insurance compay (Nautical Service Leigh on Sea) decided continued delivery too risky in face of adverse weather so revoke all insurance with no notice. Boat left in Dover. By now don't care.

Air Sea Rescue man decides to buy own boat so needs experience and offers to do some delivery with Husband. Engine blows up in middle of Thames Estuary. Back to Ramsgate.

Six months and 7000 GBP later get home. And to think I thought the delivery skipper option looked expensive!

The other side

Bought a boat in Holland last October. Arranged to sail it home with two friends in November starting on the 11th (Sunday). Flew KLM to Schipol, train to Muiderzand on Saturday good dinner in Marina restaurent. Through Amsterdam by canal then threw a left to go down via Haarlem and Gouda. Arrived Vlissingen after pleasant canal trip on Wednesday. Window in weather on Thursday so set off. One friend is ex Channel pilot and expert navigator so we motor sailed, in light airs, to Cowes in 27 hours with just 4 hours adverse tide.

Only complaint was from other friend who still considers I owe him at least two dinners in France/Belgium.

Like Napoleon said it is better to be lucky than skilful

Just thought people might like to know you can be lucky.

PS antifouled and polished last weekend with 10 minutes interruption from the weather. Guess I am doing something right

Delivery from Hell

Bought a Starlight 35 two tears ago in Burnham on Crouch and got a pro delivery crew to bring it round to Chichester. They set off in F7 at which point we discover that the previous owner has modified the exhaust and the engine if full of seawater. They sail into Ramsgate and throw the anchor over the side. It's Dunkirk re-union week and all the marine engineers are tied up working on the little ships. Deilvery crew tie up boat and leave, engineer does damage limitation on the engine 2 days later. The following week a replacement delivery crew turn up and set of for Chichester. 5am the phone rings at home, it's the new skipper on passage somewhere off Selsey Bill. The engine and autopilot have suddenly stopped and the steering is playing up can I help ! I get a rough ETA from him to arrive off Chichester Bar and arrange for a rib to go out and meet him and tow him in. We discover has has picked up 20 feet of thick builders plastic sheeting roung the prop. 1 new engine, new stern gear, new autopilot course computer plus delivery charges, tow in fee, emergency repairs to engine......... not much change out of 12,000 pounds. Oh deep joy.

Re: Delivery from Hell

Spooky Badger - last November we brought a 25' power boat round from Bradwell to Chichester. Missed all of your drama and the engine ran well but we did it in three hops over two weekends from Bradwell to Ramsgate (short run lots of beer) then to Eastbourne (park for a week) finally to Chichester. We got into Chi in the dark - with an untested set of lights and limited nav aids. I'm a novice but went round with chaps who offered to help off this board. Learnt a lot and had great fun. Glad we didn't run into the problems you encountered! Mind you I lost my breakfast near Dungerness <G>

Re: Delivery from Hell

The police don't charge for doing the escort, its all included in your council tax bill, so I can't complain too much..

And to all you others, I am feeling a lot better hearing tales of woe.. I guess this wasn't such an ordeal after all...

Anyway she is in the water now... Didn't sink over night.. and needs a thorough cleaning... Should I expect a former owner to clean up a boat before selling her.. ?Yes its nice having a few spare filters and so on.. but do I really want his old deoderant?.. Oh well four trash bags filled and things look a bit better...

Bought boat three years ago. There was my first boat and the mast was down, I decided to move the boat by lorry to her new mooring. Sailing club where boat was gently offer me to load the boat in the lorry with the crane that they hire for the launching day paying for the lorry like a club member. I accept and at 9am on the launching day my boat was on the lorry and six hours later in her new swinging mooring.

Re: Delivery from Hell

You did see the boat before you bought her, did you? And probably saw her again when cheque/cash changed hands, did you?
How didn't you know she was in the mess you describe.

And another: Sail her yourself and you'll always get the better deal!
