I am now the very proud owner of a Junk rig Corribee (shell) The hull and deck are in great condition and its stripped out ready to rebuild. I have no mast, sail or rigging so these (if I cant get the originals) will all be new. I’m pushing it for the JAC12 though. (money wise). Would love to make the start (and the finish). No more 700 mile sail to the start, just take it on the trailer.

Good news Malcolm.

Tell me, if there is no mast, sail or rig, what's the difference between a junk rigged Corribee and a mast or fractional rigged one?

that's really nice to hear of such a positive and enthusiastic start to the project.

Hope all goes well for you and the boat.

Hi, Thanks for your good wishes. Its a junk rig because of the hole through the deck is further forward, all set up to take the mast and no chainplates. It could easly be made into a traditional sloop but I really like the idea of junk, especially single handed.

I think having the hole at all is specific to the junk rig (aren't most Corribees stepped on deck?). Plus the deck ought to be designed with the strength to take the sideways loads from the partners (the mast hole) which don't exist with a deck-stepped, stayed rig. So a junk rigged hull really is different to a sloop rigged one.

Looks converted to me.
Out of interest, how much reinforcement structure has been put in place? Barring the two metal bars and the screwed down hatch which I can't imagine is adequate for the strains of the rig?

All of the Junk rig Corribee's have the same s/s tube to the mast at deck level. See Jakes "Pod" and "Mingming" This Corribee had been sailing on the Thames Estuary for 20 years as a Junk rig. As mentioned, she is a shell now ready to be rebuilt. I shall be strengthening/ replacing / modifying where necessary to make her sea worthy (ocean worthy). The Hull and decks are in fantastic condition.
Try not to worry, well, you might after seeing this next photo.
Regards

Bonjour
She has a great improvement potential !
Is she a twin keel as MingMing ?
Eric
Yes Twin Keel Eric. A very exciting project from shell up. A bit different to Helix. I have some ideas and also learnt alot from Roger and others. mainly unsinkable, strong, water tight and be able to sail well. I've got to make sure I dont make her too heavy.

I'm not worried :) My boats in perfect health!
I had my last boat stripped out like that, I thought it was going to be hard but it wasn't to bad, you'll easily make something out of that!

You can also have a really good think about the best way to do the interior as well.

Progress

Hi Vince, thanks for asking.

Well, apart from settling her into the bottom of the garden under a cover, nothing is done practically as yet. Mind you, I’ve done a tonne of thinking and planning and sketching. The weather has been wet wet wet and cold. Cant wait for Summer, if it comes.

Malcome
