I bit the bullet and bought my 30 day explorer for the canal system

which was £105 for Katie L

I am only allowed to buy one a year so I shall have to be careful , about how I use my days

although the system is dependent upon self reporting

the idea is to tape it inside the windows on both sides of the boat so that passing trust employees can check that you have filled it in for the days you are on the system

given my love of winter sailing and the level of condensation I will have to wrap it in plastic before sticking it in the window - and even then I assume that the east coast moisture will get to it

I am really looking forward to exploring the rivers

Laminate it and fill it in with a chinagraph pencil.

Laminating will solve the problem with the damp and keep it clearly visible...

If you use permanent marker it will not smudge, and cannot be accidently removed.

I often do this with white boards at work, use permanent marker to make tables.. Etc.. The problem is there is always some one who cannot write within the squares...

They writes over the permanent lines with a white board marker, this removes the permanent marker lines :mad::mad:

Not all that permanent, then? :)

Our meeting rooms have both whiteboards and giant paper notepads on the walls. Of course this gives great scope for people to accidentally write on the whiteboards with the non-wipeable pens intended for the paper pads. Going over such marks with a whiteboard pen is well-known as the cure.

People writing on the projections screens is more problematic :)

I assume

...if you laminated it what's to stop you going back and erasing days you've already had??:eek::eek:

I assume there is some sort of reporting system when a member of their enforcement staff spots the boat

there is a license number that is probably on a data base somewhere

or at least I hope they make some attempt at controlling the number of days

I assume that when I go through a lock onto the system proper that the lock keepers will check me in and check me out

but while I am on the tidal rivers I assume that I will not meet any members of staff at all

I am told that they are much more concerned about illegally occupied residential boats than they are about itinerant tourists such as Katie L

Given that this is the old British Waterways, I would not expect a state of the art central database with remote access for lock-keepers & volunteer rangers. I'm not even sure that lock-keepers would bother with a written record to be phoned thro once a week for manual input either.

I reckon it relies on honesty . . . Good job you are so honest & have had a very strict Public School upbringing like all our senior politicians, they would never bend the truth would they? :o

nothing

Did they really send you a PDF?

What's to stop you printing several?

they tell you to print two - one for each side

however, I assume that it is backed by a reporting system of some sort

clearly every time I go through a lock the keeper will be watching for a license number on each boat - not least is that it will save him doing any paperwork - checking my insurance and taking money for a day ticket

so it cuts down on the paperwork for him - all he has to do is to note my number and check to see that today has been filled in

if I spend four days in York and then return through his lock without four days filled in then he will smell a rat

my guess is that he is supposed to write down the movements through his lock each day

the lock keepers know their patches and who is on them -

so scope for cheating is very limited

and if you are caught cheating they can theoretically take away your boat - sell it off cheaply and quickly and give you the difference

honesty is the best policy

......

as for buying a licence for the sailing canoe.....

I now know that no-one cares about canoes

When I was on the canal with a 30 day explorer living on my rowing boat, I heard a strange beeping noise. looking down the line of moored boats I saw a lady in a bright jacket and some sort of electrical device, checking the licences of the moored crafts. She completely ignored me.
