Since a recent service on my boat I have had a bit of coolant in the bilges Ive had a look at the levels in the coolant and there over filled it so the over flow is seeping out
There is also a bit of oil in the bilges it appears the ve also slightly over filled the oil levels the oil appears to be around the base of the turbo unit which is close to the breather for the oil
Im going down weds am to mop up the mess and run the engines and try and see where the oil is comming from
does any body have any tips that may help
Ive run the engines for approx 7 hours since the service and thers only a small amount of oil there
The engines are yanmar 250hp 6lp dte
Any advise appreciated
Regards to all

I've had an oily mess in my bilge, ever since I bought the boat. Tried everything, but it's there again. It dont loose any oil or fuel. Wellonly a little bit now and then. But only put half a gallon in one engine this year, not bad for two hundred hours, but the rocker cover was leaking a bit. Seems that only a couple of teaspoons full of oil looks like the ToryCannion disaster. I tend to pump it out at night!! /forums/images/graemlins/crazy.gif

Need to get a new boat mate! - dirty bilges, no radar /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif haha, sorry /forums/images/graemlins/crazy.gif

Clean the bilge and lay white kitchen roll down and run the engine then you will see easily where any drips are coming from. on my engine a breather pipe the size of a brake hose was cracked out of site and access. Under the Turbo you mention. its important that the oil feed to the turbo isn`t interupted as it gets costly. Could just be that the engineer was sloppy and dropped oil into the bilge when taking filters off. quite usual as the probably work on fishing boats where it doesn`t usually matter. /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif))

Agree with Suncoast. Overfilling is almost as bad as underfilling but my guess is that the oil spillage comes from your engineer draining the oil which can be a bit tricky on some installations. You'll probably have to get used to it anyway. Its one of the immutable laws of motorboating that your bilges always have a manky pond of oily water somewhere and you'll never find out how it gets there and you'll never be able to clean it up

Oil leaks

well, yes a bit.

under the supervision of No1 Moose i went round our engines and tightened various small areas where oil was leaking with good results and no more oily drips. A good cleanup and/or having light-coloured engines is a good idea to start tracking them down.

However, this sounds a bit more serious. Let's hope it was a messy service that caused it...

After an oil change oil can get trapped all around the bilge and it can take a month or two before it drains to the lowest parts.

If you visit the ' Environment Agency ' stand at the boat shows they hand out free oil recovery mats.
You just lay them flat in the bilge and they mop up the oil so the bilge water is clean.
The mat floats and you throw it away after two or three months.

I have not needed mine since running on Mercruiser .

The Environment Agency some times want to know you do have a boat and you visit rivers/canals, so if your Geography is not up to scratch you may need a little research into rivers under the EA control.

I have also recently aquired an oil leak on my Yanmar which is causing me trouble to find the source of despite the best use of mirrors!

It is leaving the engine and dropping into the oil pan from the large hex grub screw/plug in the bottom of the bracket holding the oil filter.

Initially I thought it was the plug itself leaking and managed to get almost a whole turn on it (doesn't seat brilliantly anyone know what it's for?) - but this hasn't cured it and there seems to be a source above it slightly ie oil on the bracket above and I don't think it tracels uphill!

Next thought was the flange of the bracket and there seem to be 2 x 12mm headed bolts holding this on - couldn't move them. Manual doesn't seem to help with how this is sealed to the block either (gasket? seal?).

Finally there is a banjo fitting which I believe supplies the feed to the turbo bearing - again this is already tight and doesn't seem to be weeping.

Any thoughts appreciated

btw I have changed the filter (oil) recently but think I had the leak both before and after - also no oil anywhere on the filter case itself which I would have suspected if it was the filter fitting.

I always have oil in my bilge. It only takes a few drips mixed with water to look a complete mess. The previous owner had allowed the bilges to fill with water which spread the oily mess all around the boat. The broker sorted this by pumping out the water and putting what's best described as cat litter down.

MBM have a review in this months issue on a filter which extracts oil from bilge water before pumping overboard. Perhaps that's the answer?

Oil absorbent mats are available from chandlers. Lay them under engines and they will absorb the oil but not water. You can even ring them out when soaked with oil and reuse.
They keep my engine bilges spotless even though the engines drip a little.

Been on the boat most of the day after several phone calls to ep barrus and the service agents
Discovered the oil was coming out of the breather on to the air filter then dripping under the bilge due to the over filling
Went and bought a brass pump for removing the oil took out a mugs worth run it for 20 mins got it sorted no more oil drips
Thanks for the advise on the phone you were dead right all along
