A quick heads up working in Goring at the mo and went for a wander down to the lock for a looksee at boat trafic and whoa!! Downstream righthand gates top collar has snapped off leaving said gate dangling forward only held up by the rams i guess...anyway don`t look good esp for the poor sods on the boat trapped inside the lock...Heavy lifting gear i would think to get gate back level to fit new collar...would think it could be a while...then again maybe they will shock me Steve

Getting the collar on is easy , no heavy lifting gear is needed ;)

On a 45 degree angle to every lock gate on the Thames is a little cover marked 'Water' , however , when you lift it a large steel ring is revealed.

Ops delivery attach a turfer winch to it and winch the gate back into position , one person can do it if need be , but it is safer and easier with two.

Slide a new collar on , knock the wedges into place , job done.

I'd be surprised if it wasn't fixed by the close of play today. Ram might be bent though if it's hanging on it , so they may have to pop a new ram on.

Fair enough i bow to your superior inside info wink icon....bet the ram is f^%$£d though ...and as an asside they are sticking scaffolding up to the Chimney so i guess Mike has moved out and they are about to refurb the house? Steve

Didn't mean to come across as superior , just trying to inform . :(

Rams are easy to change again , i changed one with one of the fitters not so long ago , who turned up single handed. They are fiddley to locate on the pins .

You didn`t at all just looked bad ....another locky on the TAC forum has just said the same thing ,It is obviously one of those jobs that looks worse than it actually is ....the locky on duty did looked a bit worried though....read thinking it`s gonna be out of action for a while and for boats coming downstream a distinct lack of moorings bitween Cleeve and Goring .
working there again tomorrow so will update if it`s fixed Steve

Similar thing happened at Bell Weir some years back. We were stuck on the wrong side of the lock trying to get back to Penton. Was absolutely amazed how quickly they got it all back together.

I have to give it to the Ops Del guys , they are really good. They know the locks and their workings inside out and the best and most efficient way to do things.

Nothing is too much trouble for them.

We had them down in force the other week replacing our gates , and co-incidentally we had a barge lock breakdown while they were working on the launch lock , and one of the Turks boats was trapped.

They sorted out the barge lock , then went back to the launch. Thumbs up from me !
