Getting to grips with my sail boat

The gooseneck on my Hunter 701 does not appear to have any kind of pin to hold it in place, looks like this (just not so modern)

It has a solid style vang with pulleys that holds it underneath, and the topping lift, but should it not be permanently fixed to the mast?

Regards

A boat of that size is pretty much a big dinghy indeed its rig is smaller than e.g. an International 14 so you can expect dinghy style fittings. Having the boom drop off the gooseneck as you are trying to reef can be a PITA but it shouldn't be too difficult to rig something to keep it in place. A pin in a hole drilled right through boom and gooseneck fitting, a tape that goes round the mast using self-adhesive velcro either side of the boom, a bungee cord loop pulling the boom forward etc. etc.

A solid vang, if used instead of a topping lift (but you say you have that as well) will hold the boom up but also apply a force pulling it off the gooseneck. So I don't see why your vang is solid... (Maybe it never had a working gas strut, or the gooseneck used to have a retaining pin?)

Mike.

Thank you Twister Ken,

if you would like to PM me ColleyV8 I might be able to put you in touch with other 701 owners.

I'd agree what you describe is a dinghy style arrangement, but the forward pull from the topping lift, kicker and slab reefing lines should hold the boom in place.

Hi, I think solid was the wrong word, it is like two pieces of aluminium tube that slide inside each other, this has the pulleys and rope similar to a normal style vang attached to each end

Best seen in this photo, not back at the boat now for a couple of weeks, got my VHF course this weekend

Colley,

I think we've got our lines crossed here, no pics of the gooseneck pivot at mast to boom, did you mean the aft end of the boom where the mainsheet attaches ?
