Hi all,

I have a Capecutter19, and am looking for somewhere on either the East or South Coast to keep it that won't break the bank. For the next few years I won't be able to sail her much so am looking to store her ashore on her trailer. The first half dozen marinas/yards I've looked up seem to want in excess of £1500 for my 6m yacht.

Does anyone know of a place where I can keep her - ideally at the £500pa mark?!

Cheers,

David

You could try Calshot Activities Centre, Calshot, SO451BR. Tel. 023 8089 2077 ask for Peter Grindey Facilities Manager. fees for 2013/14 for boat park space on a trailer 5.5-6.49ml £431 plus membership and car pass of about £60.

Prob the cheapest near the Solent:

£35 per month, nice and secure and no more than 10 mins from Swanwick where you could launch for free (Shore Road) but you would need to take your trailor back to the storage site as there is nowhere to leave it.

I was told that Hamble point marina did a deal for £500 a month for June, July and August if you want to keep her in short term.

Ru$$ell has done quite a bit of research re launching and car parking on the Solent, might be worth a pm.

Particularly frugal friends of ours recommend this place:

If you want to be further up the East Coast, Frank Halls yard at Walton on the Naze is good value.

Good luck.

Edit: Just had another idea. You could give somewhere like the Colne Yacht Club (Brightlingsea) a ring and tell them your situation. Their membership is £200.00 p.a and they have a large yard available to members. You can also launch and recover very easily on their the excellent Hard. Worth a call?

Ever thought of storing her as caravan near home and towing it to where you want to sail?

Many times the weather on easy coast and south coast is very diffrenet..

thanks for the ideas - very helpful.

We tried the 'caravan' idea bfor the last cyear or so and that hasn't worked out - hence a new plan.

Thanks again,

David

On the East coast I'd start by ringing Dauntless http://www.dauntlessboatyard.com/
and Sutton Wharf http://www.misterwhat.co.uk/company/975981-sutton-wharf-rochford
both unpretencious places with plenty of long term stored boats.

I store a 27' boat long term at Suttons Wharf at Rochford and find it excellent. There is power and water points all over the yard, clean toilets and good security. Friendly people who try very hard to meet your needs. A membership of £10 to the Roach Sailing Association will ensure access to their tea tent and lots of useful advice. My cost is approximately £140 per quarter or £560 incl Vat a year for the storage.

Bad points are that you only have river access at high water as the river dries to a trickle. There is a cement works next door which can produce a fine layer of dust when the wind is in the SW. Many years ago I had to delay a launch significantly when there was long term work being performed on an ocean going fishing boat blocking the slip. That was in 2005 and I think they try not to block the slip for small craft movements now.

Give Nigel [yard manager] a ring on 01702 546147 and have a chat if you want more information.

Probably the cheapest would be a local farmer who has a vacant area or barn who does storage. I know there is one near me who has storage for cars, boats & caravans but don't know what they charge. My neighbour stores a car there whilst his extension is being built.
