Good service deserves recognition

In these days of shoddy service it is really pleasant to be able to tell of good service.

Last spring I took my boat to a brokers to sell it. Unfortunately after 8 months there was no movement so I arranged to bring it home. .. which is when I discovered the autopilot had malfunctioned whilst the boat was laid up. This was something of a nuisance as I had to both hand steer all the way and the warranty had expired whilst the boat was at the brokers.

Last month I agreed a sale for the boat and set about repairing the autopilot. I took it to the service centre and told them all the symptoms. I said the unit was out of warranty but explained the circumstances.

Today I got the unit back with an invoice.. “repaired under warranty”

Suffice it to say my next boat will have a full suit of the same manufactures equipment. ... and the service centre .. just of the M27 outside Portsmouth..

Yes Raymarine are quite lenient over their interpretation of warranty periods.

The cynic in me believes this policy is because they let known design and component faults sit out there in the field, whereas in the car industry similar faults would give rise to a general recall.

The failure rate on 2004 vintage gyro sensors was high, so much so the standing advice from the tech support department was pull the module out of the circuit board and get yourself home in non gyro mode.

Not for me they weren't - at least not their agent in France. Two months out of warranty for a pilot that was used sparingly for total time on boat of about one month.. ; they proposed me a repair that cost more than the original acquisition -because I had let the pilot get wet....!!
