Dropped my Solo sail off at Goacher's Sails in Bowness (OK, it's only 1/4 mile down the road) on Friday for them to look at the batten pockets (2 have split the bolt-rope sleeve), a new batten, a new tack eye and some mouse holes (yes, really) in the foot of the sail. It's not a bad sail, but has some wear. Oh and it's a bit dirty.

"Yeah can do that, probably about £100"

"Oh, too much, I have been offered a 6 year old sail for £150"

"Oh well if we don't patch the mouse holes, about £80"

"Great"

Collected it today. Cost £65

I'm well pleased (and they patched the holes). I don't think I could have bought the stuff to do it myself for less than about £30.

I am wondering whether my sails are worth having some work done on them.
They are over 20 years old. Gib needs a new uv strip and main I would like to have some of the bagginess trimmed out. Was thinking of taking them their if we get our boat up to the lake this year.

"mouse holes" ? Those weren't mouse holes, those were Searush's scientifically placed, venturi-assisting, pressure-dumping, Bernouilli-flow-enhancing, vortex spaces.

You will never get that boat going fast now....

David, he put a new UV strip on Chiron's genoa 2 years ago for £170.
IIRC I left the sail with Elaine one Sunday and picked it up the following Saturday, it was done in a week whatever the logistics were.
I have never thought he is cheap but he is convenient and has an excellent reputation.

I don't think I would be spending money on a 20yr old sail though.

Ah. Drat. Do you think my idea of replacing the centre-board (lack of) gasket will have similar harmful effects?
