Good places to do RYA shorebased courses?

Hi everyone

I've just received a bursary from Trinity House/ASTO to do my RYA Coastal Skipper theory & practical and the full set of RYA short courses - 1st Aid, VHF, Sea Survival, Diesel and Radar.

I'm looking to do at least my 1st Aid & VHF before I take my Coastal Skip in May, and was wondering if anyone could recommend some good schools they've been with to do these?

I'd like to do the courses in Gosport. I'm currently considering Adrenaline, OnDeck etc. but wanted to know if anyone has had personal experience of them with the shorebased courses or could recommend others?

Give Southern Sailing a ring.They can arrange all the courses you want.But don't forget the schools are only as good as the tutors they employ.Usually on a casual basis so it is pot luck who you get.

I just spoke to Southern, I was considering them for the Diesel and Radar courses. However they're in Southampton, I was after something more around Gosport. And yeah I realise it's a lot about their freelance instructors, but maybe someone's had a good one with a good school and could recommend a name etc.?

I have instructed with both, so can recommend either.

Schools have a variety of 'in-house' facilities for teaching. Some are very high tech & others not so.

Your instructors ability to teach is probably more important than the facilities. Some like to use powerpoint, OHP's etc. I prefer 'talk n chalk', but thats my preference. I find that it will allow more flexibility & input from the pupils, making it instructive & enjoyable, hopefully different to the rigid/scripted versions that sometimes can be experienced using hi-tec. Whichever methods used, instructors should be of a certain standard.

How you prefer to be taught is also important, but don't forget YOU have to put in a great deal of effort as well, to get the best out of any course. The more you know, the more you can push the instructor for information.

Best place is at home in your own time. I blitzed Coastal/YM theory using Chichester Maritime. My SWMBO later also did coastal/YM online without no problem

TudorDoc, yes, I'm going for a correspondence course for my CS/YM theory, but the other one-day shorebased courses need to be done at a centre.

I've gone with OnDeck for my VHF, will let you know how that goes. I'm also going to go with Warsash for my Sea Survival, as it has been recommended to me by the principal of Dream or Two, a sailing school supporting me up to my YM.
