Not doing the Arc but am going to canaries soon, so i can choose anywhere that has decent security with easy enough access to airport and plane back to uk. Yet again, all advice/ridicule welcomed.

oho. Looks quite good.

I suppose i was being lazy and I wanted someone to say "take it from me tcm, best place is Los Doodah, or failing that the Marinas de Las Unpronounceydoblas is ok as well"...

Try Puerto Calero or Marina Rubicon, Lanzarote. Puerto Calero is 20 minutes to Arrecife Airport. Marina Rubicon is at Playa Blanca so about 40 minutes. Both have repair facilities, lots of restaurants and bars etc. No noisy music or similar problems at either.

Very pretty asnd secure marina at Puerto Mogan on Gran Canaria. They even let cats stop there!

Seriously, if you are thinking of going there better book ahead now, good berths in the Canaries get filled very quickly from now on with the Arctics.

I would second Lanzarote..easy flights/bus and actually was cheaper to provision there...and less tacky.

Yep! It surprised us at first, but definitely Lanzarote for us too. Been to several of the islands (La Gomera's the favourite BTW) but for a less brash, cheaper and generally nicer island, Lanzarote's the one.

Take it from me tcm, the best place in the Canaries is Puerto Calero in Lanzarote!!!!
We have been lucky enough over the years to have visited most of the canarian marinas and when we decided to return here for a year or two, this is the marina we chose. Head and shoulders above the rest. The fees are reasonable and include water, electricity and free WiFi connection. 35 percent discount on longer stays. Helpful staff too and a nice liveaboard community. Local bar has an informal yacht race on Friday evenings. Good boatyard on site.
What more can I say?? Please PM if you want any questions answered.
Or try www.puertocalero.com for website, reservas@puertocalero.com to talk to the office about bookings and costs. They do English quite well.
Hope this helps.

Well I've only stayed in La Gomera, San Sebastian for a week ( in Webcraft's guide). Off the beaten track as The Canaries go so should be secure and a small helpful English community ... as Webcraft says , lots of Transatlanstic 'start' there ... so everything available?

Major downside fast ferry from Tenerife takes 30 mins (??) and ferry terminals itself 20 minutes from Tenerife South ( plus any connection time).. although there are flights into La Gomera

Everyone raves about Calero because it has poncy bronze bollards and has been Cesar Manriquified . . . we didn't like it at all - very expensive (for us anyway) and nothing there. No liveaboard community at all when we were there. Flights to/from Lanzarote are generally more expensive than those to/from Tenerife.

Puerto Mogan is lovely, but space for cats is prob. v. limited.

For sheer convenience for the airport San Miguel at Amarillo Golf, Tenerife, is ten mins by taxi. Rates are reasonable, don't know how they feel about cats. I can give you the email of Doug, the guy who runs Clubsail there, if you want - PM me or email me.

San Sebastian would still be my favourite - a 40 min ferry ride wouldn't put me off.

As said before, for flight variety and cheapness Tenerife is the best.

Shame you didn't enjoy your visit to Calero. We have been here full time since September and really enjoy life in the marina. I have spoken to a lot of boats passing through and most are very happy with the place. Not to all tastes certainly, but you can't please everyone. It's nice to get a balanced view from lots of people.
You can get a flight here for 40 euros (friend did it recently) and I came back Sunday, BA for 64 squids.
Not sure what a poncey bollard is though. Should I get one?? /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

ah, but how can i be sure you know much about true cheapness? - as far as I can see some of these flights to the canaries actually cost more than a pound! And then there's that winebox you polished off inside less than six weeks as well hm?

The pic of la gomera does look quite nice tho...

webcraft, the reason we like Puerto Calero has bugger all to do with poncy good looking bronze bollards. It is to do with being looked after well by the marina, having a safe place to leave our boats if we wish, meeting friendly and affable people some of whom are liveaboards, some circumnavigators, some ARC-or nARC participants, some day-sailors.

The guy who built the place back in 1986 is still around putting his money where his mouth is. He is proud of what he built and likes to show it off to best advantage. He runs a first class operation - one that any yacht club in the world would be proud of. Running an operation like that does not come cheap, but for my money Puerto Calero is good value. Good fun too.

A pity that you did not enjoy the place. There is no shortage of people there to make visitors welcome, but then again same as everywhere there can be the odd oddball who thrives on spreading misery about.

I've flights booked to Lanzarote at 19 euros incl taxes in October. Expensive I admit, but I reckon we'll only live once.

I'd recommend Puerto Calero any day of the week.

Fair winds.

Isn't it really annoying when someone slags off a place you like in public without really knowing what they are talking about???
I think it was a load of old bollards meself.
