New computer & only got magic Seaweed & Windguru working.

Tried googling Mark Strongs weather page and got many hits containing weather and or mark but not the page. Do I remember the name wrong.

Can anyone please post a list of good web sites.

GRIB.US

Google Grib.US, register and d/l the software. Of all the sites I used crossing the Med. in 2007, this one was the one I used more than any other.

windfinder, windguru, passage weather, ant veal's great weather, metcheck, the bbc coastal f'cast, US grib.

you can have too many forecasts. you can get to the point where they are all saying different things and you know less than you did before you got them.

dont forget to look out of the window!

www.weatherweb.net

Simon Keeling www.weatherweb.net the last 4 years his long range forecast has allowed us to have the best 3 weeks of the summer, again this year he has been spot on for our 3 weeks holiday nice one Simon.

www.westwind.ch for synoptic charts from various sources (incl UK Met Office).

The following are subscription only services, but you can sign up for a free 2 week membership (good to do if you are going on a long cruise and have internet access):

www.theyr.com
www.theyr.tv

- I don't think there is any connection between the two. They appear to be in competition with each other.

weather

Thanks for the replies here as I have learnt some new sites; I have been using metmarine as it is free but it is only today and tomorrow not distant forecast but I have found it good for the med as it has regional 20 nm areas

One other useful place is the US Navy Public WXMAP service (ignore any message about security certs -its a .mil server). It won't give local detail - but is still pretty handy.

https://www.fnmoc.navy.mil/wxmap_cgi/index.html

It requires some interpretation from the user ;-) -but I have found it thoroughly useful over the last few years- both for sailing and snow weather prediction.
850 hPa Temperature [C], winds [kts] and Rel. Hum[%] -roughly equates to 1100m altitude and is very useful for mountain conditions.
As with most predictive stuff, it is a matter of timing. Up to about 3 days - it's pretty good, 3-6 days probably 60%- more timing than content!. I often pick up features 3 or 4 days before the Beeb grudgingly mention the possibility of nasty conditions coming.

And watch the sky as well, keep a handle on what the wind is doing... that will tell you quite a lot.

Find what you like (and trust) and stick with it.

regards, graeme
