It's time to renew my flares, and as the process is a bit of a nuisance in Northern Ireland I was planning to nip across to Scotland or England to buy new ones. Scotland is nearer.

So the question is, which marina on the Ayrshire coast has a good chandler where I could pick up flares on a Saturday morning?

Not on Ayrshire coast perhaps, but bought mine last year from Duncan Yacht Chandlers in Scotland Street, Glasgow. Noticed they had a good stock when I was in there yesterday. No connection other than a satisfied customer. Other possibilities are Kyle Chandlers (Troon) and Largs Chandlers

Thanks. I've used Duncan Yacht Charter mail order before, but really looking for somewhere I can get to by boat and walk in and buy them. Glasgow would be an extra day's sail.

I noticed Kyle Chandlers on the web, but no mention of flares on their website. Of course I could try them by phone if I don't get any local knowledge from the forum.

would have thought Troon, with a phone call they could always get them in for your arrival (might have to pay in advance). Always found them very helpful when we have been there

Largs Chandlers at Ardrossan were willing to take the old ones if I bought the new set there. If you have difficulty disposing of the old set, they do tend to last a good while. I found some of my father's old flares from 1980 something. 3 out of 5 worked! The time honoured method of a sack and a round shot in deep water might be the less politically correct alternative?

I bought my last set from Largs Chandlers in Ardrossan (Clyde Marina). Although largs can usually charge better than the Light Brigade these were a good price. If you could find them mail order anywhere you could always get them delivered to a marina of your choice and pick them up.

Largs Chandlers is great, takes back old flares, and if paid over the phone will leave stuff to be collected out-of-hours at the marina office. If you are nipping across by boat and can either bear a short visit or can take the ground I am sure that Andy at Kippford Slipway (it's a chandlers) could sort you out too.

There are commercial chandlers in Kirkcudbright and Girvan, both of which I would expect to sell flares.

Or, if you fancy going abroad, the chandlers in Peel and Douglas both sell 'em.

Thanks everyone. It sounds like a call to Largs or Kyle chandlers to see what they have in stock is the next step. Mail order to a mate in Whitehaven (if I can twist his arm) is another alternative or maybe call off at Peel.
