Is there anyone out there with local knowledge of Korcula who can recommend a good anchorage in the Bura? I know from experience in this area that even on the leeward side of an island, when the bura blows, it can still get nasty as it gusts down the mountainsides.

A blow coming through on Sunday night so a pronto response would be great!

Thanks.

I would have thought Gubesa at the western end near Vela Luka would be a good bet. The small bay is enclosed by a small island to the west and a larger island to the south which is joined to the mainland by a causeway. The best anchorage is just north of the larger island or east of the smaller island although the former will be less exposed in a bora. The central and northerly parts of the bay tend to be rocky although if you can get your anchor wedged between some large rocks you presumably won't be going anywhere!

Should add that I've never been there in a real blow!

I can endorse Richard's recommendation of Gubesa (42° 58.35'N 16° 40.5'E), you will be completely protected there and it's good holding in sand. The steep sides to the north should keep the worst at bay, although I too have not been there in a real bora.

It is a lovely location. I was once there on a beautiful summer's evening and, as dusk fell, sounds of voices and the clink of glasses came from the balconies of the few houses that ring the bay. Then a woman started to sing an aria, clearly a professional, and a man's voice joined her. It was a sublime performance that, when it ended, prompted a ripple of applause from all listeners, including the three yachts anchored in the bay.

We are based in Croatia and we were anchored in Gubesa only 1 month ago. Yes, I agree it is an excellent anchorage and should be reasonably well protected from the Bora. There is a good restaurant in the bay too. Otherwise at the other end of Korcula, east of Korcula Town, there is a cluster of islands with protected sounds between them which will also offer shelter from the Bora. Having said that, if it is a really strong Bora, I would prefer to be tied up to something concrete in Korcula Town ACI marina!
