Good Boatsmanship versus Sailsmanship

Re: Interesting

I think that this is a heritable trait, and it is probably something simple. My wife was fascinated by boats as a little girl, so was I, so are our children.

A friend, who is a better seaman than I, always handles his boat "by the numbers" - he does not have the instinctive sense of what the boat will do that I have.

Re: Quite possibly

Well I'm the same as you. I rarely wear a Lifejacket until I deem it sufficiently bad enough to need one. Of course you can get cought out. I was involved in an incident, only a tear ago, on someone elses boat, when I suddenly wished I had been wearing one. But I'm here & I didn't get wet on that occaision So I was wrong about the need too.

When I sail with Trainees thats a whole different ball game. The don't breathe without protection. The current "Sue for Anything Society" we now live in take away the edge for me & the Trainees we take. It's a great shame.
