Hi Guys

Does anybody have any experience of a good boat yard to lift out of the water in the canaries please? we need to lift out and replace our rudder bearings and inspect some stress cracking to the skeg and slap another coat of antifouling on as the Joton product used last year has failed (could be a quick glassing job) Most suitable location would need to include:

No restrictions on living aboard
No restrictions on working on our boat
Facility's like engineering shop and a good chandlery local would be very advantageous

Any help on this would be very much appreciated

Darren n Vicki

Puerto Calero, Lanzarote. We stayed aoard our boat whilst we had the cutlass bearing and prop shaft replaced by an excellent local engineer, small store on site and really helpful staff. it of a trek to the loos but perfectly manageable.

Is the chandlers any good now? We were there for 2 years and had to go to Arrecife for most things. We had a car but running several boats meant twice a week!

Hiya,

Try Rubicon Lanzarotte. Ticks all dem boxes.

Hi Chris, we just been there for a night, fantastic place but a bit steep at 34Euros a night, didn't realise we had a problem then but Vicki did notice that you couldn't do work on you own boat.

Is Lanzarote the better place for parts, or are some of the other islands more well equipped???

Regards

Back in 2007 I used the boatyard at Las Palmas, Gran Canaria. Ideal for all the things you wanted and good security. I'm guessing its still running as back then might be a tad busy soon in the run up to the ARC but they were quite helpful when we needed things done. It's called Varadero Muelle Deportivo, Tel & fax 928 244408, unless thats changed.

Thanks Guys

We are thinking about Las Palmas as all we can find on the internet points to this being the hub of the canaries for boats. I have sent them an e-mail but there website does state that only painting and varnishing is the only work allowed unless you use a contractor. The Boat yard is under new ownership by GLOBAL NAUTIC SERVICE and they seam to have gone all Spanish (Rip of the tourist) Will have to wait for their reply. If any fomites have been here recently, feed back on how much you can do on your own boat would be very helpful.

Thank Again

Hiya, I reckon you can get just about everything for boats in Arrecife.

Berthing does seem to have had a big increase in fees since we left there 5 years ago.....where does the time go????

All the info you need is in the pilot book: http://www.amazon.co.uk/exec/obidos/ASIN/1846233364/dolcetto-21

I learned many years ago to have two copies: one at home and one on the boat.

Marina San Miguel on Tenerife allows all the things on your list, but you need a car for a chandler. I normally pay about €130 for a fortnight, so dirt cheap.

Thanks for your information Nigel, we will look into this boatyard. I do have a latest copy of the Atlantic islands pilot book on board with us, but although this is very helpful due to the nature of pilot book they are generally out of date so we are looking for information like yours which is current.

Thanks again

Darren and Vicki

We are here now for the foreseeable and went exploring - only chandlery is in the boatyard and the seem to have mostly paint, epoxy and cleaning stuff. The other place is closed "for stock taking" and seemed virtually empty.

But you can work on your boat here and liveaboard in the boat yard - there is a cat here doing just that now.

Thanks. We really enjoyed our time there but access to Chandlers was a pain. The old one shut down and turned into a... shoe shop! Guess there is not enough trade to keep one open.

Hi guys, Susie and I are in Puerto calero where we are going to have to get a new Rudder, bearings, GRP work and a whole host more things. While the chandlery here is not good but the 3 chandlers in Areciefe are fantastic not to mention the large hardware store just beside them. We have just been there by car today to rece! You can work on your boat in the yard here but they are full until December. We are being lifted on Tuesday to inspect our damage but we have to go straight back into the water and wait for December for a slot in the yard, Suits us as we will have to spec a new rudder, get it made and delivered to here....

The Chandlery in the Galleria at Puerto Calero closed down a little while ago, wasn't very good anyway! The marina say it will be reopening shortly but in Lanzarote time "shortly" could mean any time in the next 10 years!
The Chandlery in Arrecife (SH. Duarte) is good, caters predominantly for the locals and those making a living from boating, consequently the prices are OK, just need a car to get there. I've always found them very helpful. There's also a bit of a B and Q - "Suministros San Gines" nearby which sells lots of boatie and non boatie stuff.

another vote for Calero, been lifted out there a few times .... and confirmation that the chandlery in the marina is indeed rubbish. But the yard itself sells some stuff ... tho for serious stuff like thru-hulls or engine stuff you wd have to go to Arrecife anyways, i think, even from Rubicon

We hauled out here (/URL])) in December 2007. Very good experience. Liveaboard. Work. Hot showers. Chandlers (More fishing boat than yacht) but others a short bus ride away.

Need to phone in advance to ensure space and cradle are available.

Thanks Guys

We have jumped across to Las Palmas, and hopefully we can make use of the ARC discount in the chandlers next week and the comprehensive fiberglass suppliers 20 miles away and lift on Wednesday. Although if this doesn't work out then we have all your suggestions and we will try the next place.

Fair winds
