Just watched a vid about the little French boat that raced across the Atlantic and was built in its hundreds for French sailers, why do we now double berths, showers and all our shore side gubbins when we set off to breast the waves?

When I started boating First Mate and I were skint, young and impecunious. Camping on water was where it was at, and it was great.

Those days are long gone. Our bodies will not cope with cramped berths, bucket and chuckit loo, single burner cooking and no proper washing facilities.

Today we have a fantastic boat for our needs, walk around bed, great heads/shower, great Galley, four different types of cooking, large storage capacity, washing machine, freezer, two large fridges, microwave and an 8KW Genset to run the 240v stuff. We spend up to 5 months aboard each season.

Would we go back to a simpler boat?

No chance.........................................

Floating caravan is what you are describing. Back in the mid 1960's I can remember the only way to get water was in carriers from a tap at the top of the hard at high tide. Fuel was carried in a similar way. No mains power anywhere or battery powered power tools. We did have 2 burner cooker with a grill and sailed every month of the year without a heater.

Today I took all the bits and pieces to change Concerto from foot pumped cold water to pressurised hot and cold water with a shower. These boxes were added to the firdge unit I still have not fitted yet. Must start these jobs and a few other smaller ones in the New Year.

So, until recently I have not been too far away from how I started sailing, except a marina makes water and power so much simpler to obtain.
