Going down to France and Spain for a while and wondered about taking my tender, a 2.8m Yam inflatable with a Honda 5hp engine for some fun and wondered if any form of paperwork was required for courses and registration.

Hi and welcome.

Not sure what the legal requirements but if I remember correctly you need an ICC. I think in your case the best way to get this is to complete a RYA Poweboat Level 2 course (coastal), you can then apply to upgrade this to an ICC (free if you are a RYA member about £30 otherwise).

If you are in French waters it would be a good idea to get a CEVNI endorsement which any RYA training centre can do (short exam paper). You need this for French inland waterways but it would be prudent to have for coast hopping as well (some ports may be classed as inland waterways)

May have got this wrong but if I have, hang about because someone will correct me.

I think no papers are needed because it is sub-6hp. Boat rental places in France rent out 6hp boats to anyone, no icc needed ("sans permis"). Above 6hp they insist the renter has ICC etc.

Dunno about inland waterway CEVNI stuff

It would only be off the beach stuff to potter around doing some snorkelling. Its more than likely it would be in Spain as well as we both like Spain. Thanks for the advice.
