PBO article this month - guy hits rock he knew was there.

Reminds me of the case in America - chap bought Winnebago or what ever motorhome - drove down the motorway - switched to cruise control and went back to make a cup of coffee and sandwich! - Crashed - sued - Judge awarded damages as company had not made it COMPLETELY idiot proof.

My old dad used to say 'drive as if everybody else on the road is an idiot.' How right it is to apply that everywhere in life.

Wot? was the rock an idiot?

Apart from the confused messages - aren't you setting yourself up for a fall (er .. grounding) here.
PLEASE tell us about your first grounding, and did you know the sandbank was there or thereabouts?

My old Dad used to say the same, so I do.............

You're all idiots! /forums/images/graemlins/tongue.gif

A tad unfair that.
I've read the article and it doesn't read to me as if the guy was grossly negligent or stupid. To then imply that he is an idiot is grossly unfair.

As far as I can see it's an honest, well written piece, which illustrates the problems which can occur when using electronics which you are not fully familiar with.

I suspect that he is a pretty good sailor.

Of course the intention is not to lambast anyone just find out what the panel thinks - then we can work out just how on our toes we have to be while sailing in the midst of our fellow sea-farers.

'The rock' didn't run into the boat.

If you have a chart use it; on the chart, it doesn't say: "Not to be used for Navigation".

Compris?

No I don't "compris".
Where did the assumption that everyone else is an idiot come into it? - total non sequitur!

And downright pompous and disrespectful to boot.

You also managed to avoid my point - have you ever run aground? (That you'd admit to after your little diatribe)

And will you ever admit on this forum if you ever do?

You set up your opinion (and thats what 90% of this forum is - nothing more than opinion) and waited for.. what? agreement? acclamation for your clear - sightedness?

Obviously you didn't expect dissention and seem a little offended when its offered.

I have no problem with that.

Sad that you seem to have caught 'Crustyititus ' like many on these forums.

Hope that decent types are not going to let them ruin this channel as well.

They don't ruin the forum, only provide light relief. Who are these 'decent types' sounds a bit snooty! Chrusty obviously got it right this time.

As you have asked me to explain this the most simplest of expositions in the simplest of forms as you are having difficulties, I will. It means that if you drive (in whatever sphere of life you move through) as if everybody else is going to do something stupid, i.e. not rely on them using common sense (like the Winnebago manufacturers omittted to do) you should be ready to avoid the problems caused by the lack of conscious thoughtfulness exhibited by the rest of the world.

DoI look over the shoulder of those taking me into dangerous waters, yes I do. This case exemplifies the fact you should not trust anyone, especially someone who says @I've been doing this for XXX years and so on.

Ref opinion, yes the post was done for that reason - to get opinions on the facts of the case.

Offended - no you will have to go a long way further than just general stupidity to offend me.

Run aground - no - due to reading the Pilot Books, charts, pilotage, sea disturbance, common sense - you know all the things this guy should have been using to keep himself and his crew safe.

You really are naive if you think you can post anything on these forums without receiving dissension.

As before, I have no more to say to you. I refuse to do intellectual battle with aman who is so clearly under-ordnanced.

I leave it to you now to leave the usual inane riposte.

Why do you keep trying to use an urban myth as a reference? It's been proven incorrect on this thread already, as it has been every other time someone has posted it.

To put it in simple terms, it's not a true story.

I suppose you could say 'let him without sin..' or something that's worn out and really boring.

It seems to be joujou this sort of thing. Honest guys it won't come out of the night on a big growler to haunt you. Just make you hang on a bit tighter when you hear it.

I didn't ask, I suggest that this "simplest of expositions" is not applicable to the case. (MOST simplest? a bit redundant wouldn't you say?)

I understand "defensive driving", I wouldn't couch it in your offensive terms, and I wouldn't apply it to a rock.

Another non-sequitur, now you've moved from not trusting other craft to not trusting your crew.

To what purpose? None that I can divine. Looks to me like the object was to "lambast".[ QUOTE ]

Ooohh - personal stuff! Are we talking about my general stupidity or yours?

Err.. Hang on.. what kind of backflip was that? I'm not sure whether the "you" here refers to me personally or to "you" the (obviously idiot) masses.
If "you" is me then you have lost the place!.
If "you" is everyone then I concur, but your reaction to criticism appears to demonstrate just that quality.

As before? Usual inane ripost? I believe you must have me confused with some other forumite, I doubt you've met my inane riposts before.

I wish I could agree that they provide light relief but I can't. These forums are probably now at there lowest ebb for some years. People are just staying away . The diversity, knowledge, and genuine respect for others despite their views is what we have lost.

There has always been a convention that PBO should be kept generally as a practical forum but they are now invading this too. For many people, including myself, this has been the last one worth logging into.

ignore him and maybe he will play elsewhere, I am not convinced he even boats
