Can anyone recommend an infallible glue to stick rubber on to PVC fabric which will work in the tropics?

The rubbing strips, handles and other attachments on my dinghy are coming off – again!. The dinghy, NZ made, is constructed out of PVC fabric. It is now about 5 years old. The seams on the sponsons are fine (heat sealed?).

Last year, I glued back on the rubbing strip with 3M 5200 (usually infallible), and the other bits with a PVC glue obtained from a professional dinghy maker. In preparation, I thoroughly cleaned, removed all the old glue and degreased the surfaces, using detergent and various solvents including, as well, acetone.

I use a two part glue for PVC inflatables, from Zodiac, it sticks extremely well, my boat (3.6m) and 30hp engine, dangle from my davits with Zodiac lifting eyes I glued on, you abrade the surface, clean and then put three coats on each side, as per the instructions then stick them together and hey presto they stick and haven't moved yet, (3 years) In the meddy aswell. ie, Hot!

Well you have to prime the rubber with two part hypalon adhesive, the glue it with two part PVC adhesive. Wash the area on the boat to be glued with MEK and the rubber with touluene, 2- 3 coats of glue on each service. Make sure the glue is not wet when bonding.

As long as it's in your hold baggage, shouldn't be a problem, I've done it with paint and all manner of things! Once hand carried a 5' diameter shipswheel! /forums/images/icons/smile.gif

Thanks for that - any proprietary names for the glues and possible suppliers. I will look up on the internet and, as suggested by Colin, will contact Zodiac.

Had to hand carry about 30 kilos of stuff - including a v. heavy duty alternator. Why? A) too important to lose and B) for VAT reclaim purposes - just in case they wanted to see it. Had to pretend the bag only weighed about 5 kilos so as to get it aboard. Not wanted on voyage luggage was full of other boat bits! Will be doing the same again soon. Thanks again for input.

Tip Top manufacture FC 2000, it's a two part two coat application. I have used this in the tropics on an inflatable, that was about 5 years ago. still no problem. Just make sure you get the position right first time because you will never move it.
