As I have limped from one disaster to another over the last 3 boating years and as I have even had to sell the same boat twice, I really want to get my next boat right. /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

I have now been paid the legal debt owed to me from my last attempt to purchase a boat and would like to thank everyone for their support. There is still one more victim out there trying to be paid but that is not my direct concern so I shall not be doing any public campaign but I will offer as much behind the scenes support as I am able to for him.

So now to move on.

I have my eyes on a boat - a new one on a new production line not built in the Far East.

It is a semi-displacement power cat, 55 foot long, 24 foot beam. Can do 25 knots at a pretty low fuel consumption but can do 8 knots at a fantastic fuel consumption maybe about 3 mpg. It is capable of crossing the Atlantic or Pacific - has a range of nearly 5000 miles and can dry out anywhere. Its more towards the Nordhavn style than the planing boat gin palace style but I see beauty in that.

SWMBO wants me to check every aspect out before laying down a cent (I have no idea why? /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

You are welcome to guess what the boat is and their is a prize of a full size Mars Bar for the winner.

The main purpose of this post is to pose a question.

How much will that 24 foot beam restrict me in harbours/marinas around the country? It can dry out anywhere but 24 foot does seem a touch beamy. I need to settle in my mind the restrictions I would suffer if I took this course. So please chip in with your thoughts - too beamy or not?

It was when a recuse helecopter joked that they may try a practice landing on the aft deck rather than a winch down, that I realised just how wide that beam really is!

Berth size could be a problem but the main problem I would suspect would be Lock size depending on the cruising area but a lot of the marinas in France south coast uk, belgium and holland have locks.

The TCM55 seems to be 55ft long and 24ft wide and, yes, beauty would have to be in the eye of the beholder on this one /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Am I munching a Mars bar sometime soon?

My problem here is that many would tell me that a 60 foot boat is restricted in going places but in practice I have never suffered with such a length.

The last single hulled boat I looked at was almost a 21 foot beam, so what is an extra 3 or 4 feet?

On the other hand I amy well be more restricted by beam than length.

In Watchet I could dry out in the outer harbour and I would have a 4 kw air cooled gene system built into the boat for such an occasion. I have a DVD of all the harbours in the Bristol Channel in progress so I will take another look at the different gates but I am surprised if Watchet is too narrow.

Bugger, you mean that there's another 55' long, 24' wide, 25 knot cat out there that's been prodded with the ugly stick? /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Mike was actually closer than you probably imagine.
I'm sending you a pm, not sure if you want to disclose further details yet.

stop analyzing your requirements to the "nth" degree!

[/ QUOTE ]Why, wouldn't you, before spending a million or so?

I think looking at the problems associated with getting into places is hardly that!! /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

All suppliers of 24ft wide boats are quivering at the thought of having an order cancelled based on the answers given by the forum to your latest question.

(No offence intended)

I have actually never cancelled a boat order in my life but i understand where you are coming from!

I am simply investigating my options. I know what I want as regards many details - big boats do not bother me as regards going places but what does niggle at me is if this beam is just a bit too much.

Oh, man, that's ugly!

Well that is one monster boat... I like the concept, but she sure looks like she's been hit by the ugly stick... far too much freeboard.........

And like all our boats, they are UNSINKABLE No other boat offers you this amount of safety.

Cats can and do sink, ask Scillypete......

As for the beam, the main problem is gonna be getting a permanant berth at a reasonable cost, Im sure the Cat fans here will comment!

There is no such thing as a perfect boat.

Have fun!

BTW; have you looked at the Dashews new FPB series... ??

There is no way in the world that I would ever consider an Eco Cat!!!!!!
I promise you it is not an Eco Cat but it does look very much like the guess that has been made and that some may consider very ugly - at least it stops one being accused of posing. /forums/images/graemlins/cool.gif

I was going to suggest one of these, but it isnt wide enough (only 18ft beam) and it looks to much like a Sunseeker/Fairline/Princess to be it.

Did you consider one by the way?
