I used to winter there and haven't been for a few years but I am expecting to winter there this year. You used to have to start up the Lune about 1hr 45min before HW as the dock gate is only open HW-1 to HW. The Marina is through a lock at the rear of the dock. Macmillan's still gives the same advice and as far as I know there is no restriction at spring or neap tides. Hope this helps. CLP

You will need to book the inner lock, the outside gate opens-1 to hw. During the day, the inner lock is usually manned, but not always, safer to book, with british waterways. The marina is run by Glasson basin yacht co. Barbara is the ladys' name. Nice place, secure. But you will need transport, it's completely dead, summer and winter!

The few times that I've been in and out I've never booked to lock out of the inner lock but it sounds like good advice. All I can say that the last time I locked out I left it too late - within half an hour of the sea lock gate opening - and was lucky to get a lock out. I was spotted by the lock keeper as he was having a brew. As I was told, find out the locking out times to the outer basin and get there early.

BTW The Stork at Condor Green just up the creek sells a decent pint of T Taylor Landlord.

Dont leave Lune bouy earlier than 1hr 45min before HW. Three hours before you can almost walk across the river, At HW its 30ft deep! Stick to the marked channel as there are training walls.

I regularly visit Glasson Dock from across the bay and would agree about not attempting to sail from the Lune Cardinal until about 90mins before HW.

Our yacht draws 6ft and we only visit if there is a tide of about 8.5m or above - I guess it is possible on smaller tides but it could be tricky.

Barbara, Charlie & Co. at the marina are all very friendly and helpful - and I must disagree with the comment that the place is dead - both the Victroria and Dalton Arms are good for a meal and pint.

The outer gates are open for an hour up to high water and the inner gates are manned by BW staff on each high water, in day light, throughout the summer althoughwise it needs to be booked.

Steve.

Yes, very true about the pubs, but I wintered there, they get very, very quiet in the winter, they are only very quiet in the summer. But a good pint! Some good food now I hear, but no reason to visit anymore, mybrother with Swn-y-mor has now left and is wintering with me in sardinia, a little warmer than Glasson!

Not true. Harry's never been to Glasson. I have many times though. I would not say it was quiet. Less of course you like a hundred motor bikes screeming about.

That CC Scott knows nowt.../forums/images/icons/laugh.gif

CC Scott has his eye on the lovely Barbara and so he just keeps giving Glasson a bad press so that no-one will go there and he gets her all to himself.
Those Barrow lads were definately up to something with a Donkey and if memory serves me right I think there was also a Goat and a tortoise involved - and a neoprene thong.
Spearaxe has gone quiet - lovely boat.

John - have you been sniffing the diesel fuel again? I never found any donkeys at Glasson. There was a shire horse, though.

John

I'll bow to your expertise on donkeys.
Yes, the sailing's been good and we've even been using the spinnaker. The main problem has been the wind dying or in the wrong direction on the way back across the Irish Sea to Fleetwood. And, as you know, it is a tight tidal window into the marina.
From your posts, Scotland sounds miserable, just like the IOM.

Regards

Mike

Scotland has been wonderful and continues to be so. We had one Scorcher of a week at Easter, another at Whit - 8 long weekends after Whit as I don't work on Fridays then, and 4 brilliant weeks in the summer.
There appeared to be a rash of people all thinking they'd put their boats up there next summer so I was doing my best to put them off.
Doh - now I've given the game away.
