I love having the boat in Plymouth, it's great for holidays. Trouble is. It's 310 miles away, so cant get to it for a little mending, polishing. Or the odd weekend. Now I've had bots in Wales and sailed to Ireland more often than can remember. Been to IOM twice and West coast of scotland a good few times.

I know all about tides, streams etc. Thats why I like my boat some place it dont matter to much.

On the other hand, I'd like to get to the boat in half an hour or so, do the bits of mending that theres no way to ask others to do. Bring bits home, that just need a bit of fettling, or bits to upholsterers shop that cost a fortune done on site.

Now, you lot that keep boats in places like Glasson, Preston, Fleetwood. What do you folks do. Can I move the boat out to a buoy a few days before we set off. Avoiding some 3 oclock start. Or do I have to get up in the middle of night to go anywhere.

The perogative is. I need to get to the boat in half an hour from Preston'ish, so I can work on it. I need to be able to take it, probably single handed to a buoy, whatever. We need to set off in our own time. 11am onwards. Arrive some place within 4 hours. Fuel must be available at one end or tuther. I dont want to be on watch all night.

Its fleetwood then Hadyn - coming out of the Dock or waiting to get in using a mooring at Knott End - 4hrs to the IOM if you can do 12 - 15 kts. Same for Whitehaven
There's sod all at Glasson - I suppose you could go on the Ribble but its a ballache of a spot.

I know it's a bit of a laugh to some , but have you thought about the Wash as a possible . Access is better than it used to be , and it makes for some entertaining days when you get it wrong

i know a good shrink who could help get these thoughts out of your head,i recently skippered my mates new boat from glasson dock to fleetwood ,the problem with glasson dock is that you can only take the boat out 1 hr before high water as they shut the lock gate at hw,fleetwood is aprox 1.30 before and after hw,although you could moor up in the river, but with living in blackpool i see how quickly the sea can change and there is not really much shelter on offer, why dont you have a change and bring the boat to scotland ,the drive is very pleasant travelling north quieter roads than having to travel south

Hadyn,

Do you intend to go out during the winter months or do you just want to be able to work on your boat and keep it near by!!

I'll give you two guesses where I'm going this winter and the pubs are great.

I think you had better move house otherwise your life will be controlled by tides. I've been at Glasson, Fleetwood and Preston. Glasson is by far the nicest, Preston the most accessible by land and Fleetwood the longest access either side of high tide. On the other hand if you are wanting to work on the boat, Preston has a limited selection of spares in the swindlery but its open every day, Fleetwood has a decent one but its closed a lot of the weekend out of season and Glassons is open all day every day and carries quite a good stock. Guess Holyhead is the nearest all tide states access to us in the North West

Tom and others.

I'm quite familiar with Preston, glasson and Fleetwood. But funnyly enough, not from the sea. Though I am aware of the tide limitations.

I've ben all the south coast, france and CI's. Wales,Ireland, south and east coast more times than I can remember, IOM a few times and Scotlands West Coast a few times.

The only place I've never sailed a boat, is where I live. Lancashire!! I keep wondering why.... /forums/images/graemlins/crazy.gif

Yes Tom, I normally cruise year round, but from Glasson.. /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif
