Shopping around for insurance after Panteneius demanded a substantially increased premium. GJW are best so far. Anyone got anything good or bad to say about them? (PM if you like!).

I have only ever heard good things about GJW,

One guy in Porthmadog who's boat was struck by lightning was very complimentary, on calling them there was no quibble, just get the work done was their response.

I keep hearing good things; I work with a retired surveyor who used to have very close business relationships with GJW and he would not go anywhere else, he has seen the business from the inside so to speak, he did some loss adjuster work and found them very fair. They are based in Liverpool.

They do not insure catamarans which annoys me, I must be the only person who has ever begged a company to let me give them my money!

I can only speak from a third party, but my feeling is people insured with them are very happy and confident with the cover they have.

I had no quibble with them untill my renewal premium came through this year with a 30% hike on last years (wiith no claims made). I checked out others and found Haven Knox-Johnston offered me the cover I needed at slightly less than last years GJW cost.

Hi Ken
I'm with GJW Direct, but never had to claim so I can't really comment on that. All I can say is that the premiums always seem pretty competitive and the staff are always very helpful on the phone when you have any queries or want to make any changes to the policy (often at no additional charge).

I am with HK-J and have had a 10% hike after another further discounting an additional year NCD, but GJW have quoted only a few quid more than current cost with HK-J. I guess which ever company you are with you get a better new business deal if you change. May be that you have to switch every year to get the deal - daft really when they have all the admin set up and you have not made a claim.

My GJW policy arrived just today as it happens. They were highly recommended by the broker but he may be on commision for all I know! The quote was almost identical to Craft Insure and another I can't remember the name of.

My only complaint is that it took them 1.5 months and two phone calls to actually send me a policy and take some money off me (at least I assume they've finally charged my card) but they assured me I was covered each time I rang so no biggy.

Been with them for several years and very positively impressed-one claim when oil spillage in Portsmouth harbour-one call and they sorted it all directly with the yard, fast , friendly and when come renewal last year having changed boat they were not as competitive as another insurer, called GJW and no hesitation from them in matching the competitions quote-I would recommend them strongly.

PS I don't work for them!

First year I got my boat I did not have much time to shop about for insurance and was not aware of all the different companies. Navigators & General quoted £294.42 and GJW £197.93 so I went with GJW. Second year I shopped about a bit GJW £207.63 but someone recomended K C Powell from Leigh-on-Sea. I rang them up and was very impressed with the fact that I was talking to a guy who recognised the type of boat immediately, was reasonable about survey and did not seem to be in a hurry to get a credit card number. I did have a restriction on single handed sailing with GJW but K C Powell were ok apart from night time single handed which I did not want anyway. I had sailed dinghies for 20 years and had RYA yachtmaster so I was not inexperienced. Their quote was £124.69. I have not had to claim but given their reputation I would be amazed if there was a problem. The policy is underwritten by Royal & Sun Alliance. Several other people I know have moved to Powell. Telephone 01702 470035.
They have since been appionted by the Macwester Owners Association as recommended insurer. Worth a try.

Re: How about SAGA

argh! ........ you will receive several of the following: invitation to purchase a stena stair lift, complimentary bus-pass wallet, coach trips to Llandudno, commemorative coin sets etc etc. Your postman will hate you.

their database is more difficult to get out of than Barlinnie jail ........... ask them for a quote over the phone ...

Changing insurers

>May be that you have to switch every year to get the deal<

That's what I've done for years with car insurance, and contents insurance. Naive of me to think that maybe boats would be different.

I'm also with KC Powell and have been for several years, never had to claim yet so don't know what claiming is like.
But they were not competitive for an Enterprise dinghy earlier in the year - Craftinsure were much cheaper.

Re: How about SAGA

I got a quote from Saga last year. It seemed very competeitive - under £500 as against almost £700 from Navigators. However, when I tried to confirm the electronics cover it became apparent that the staff didn't have a clue what they were talking about. Electronics were covered providing that they had been "professionally fitted" etc. etc. I decided to stay with Navigators.

Re: How about SAGA

Its extraordinary how these things vary from person to person. Having taken over 64/64ths of Sweet Lucy this year I had to find new insurance. Saga was by a huge margin the cheapest I found, and the person I spoke to knew boats and could actually respond intelligently to the brand names of elecronics, dinghies outboards, etc.
